Arjun’s Divya astras

Question.

I have read in one version that Arjun went to heaven and received all the Divya astras from Devs. Now, if Arjun had all the Divya astras, why could he not counter:

1. Bhargav astra shot by Karna.

2. Nagastra shot by Karna. ( Krishna made the chariot sink in ground to save Arjun ).

3. Naryan astra shot by Ashwattama.

4. In some versions, Karna shoots Vaisnav astra which Arjun could not counter so Krishna had to stop it.

  1. karna was most power full than arjuna because karna contains vijaya bow. parshuram handover vijaya to karna. fact was that “jiske pas vijaya bow rahega usko harana namumkin hai aisa kaha jata hai” MB ke yudh me krishna ne arjunko karna ke banose bachaya tha. krishna bhi jante the ki karna arjunse kahi adhic parakrami hai

    1. karn may be stronger but remember the karn and arjun are rebirth of raktha beeja and nara. the raktha beej is created by brahma to kill shiv. nara was created by vishnu to counter him.rakthabeej has 1000 shields.nara has 1000 hands. they both fought for many years. at last nara has two hands and raktha beej has only only shield left. so the gods (brahma ,vishnu&maheswar)stopped the fight.and they continued to perform fight during mahabharath war. if arjun was killed the shiv has to fight with karn. so its luck for arjun. and also arjun has power from vishnu(sri krishna) and shiv. and also arjun practiced brahmacharya where karn cannot..so karn is unlucky.and lord shiv gave his own pasupatha astra to arjun for victory so karn cannot win even there is dangerous conditions

    2. Arjuna had the most powerful weapon which no one had answers to – Pashupathastra. Arjuna was not inclined to use it against any mortals. Karna used powerful weapons that Arjuna did not have answer; the only exception being Pashupathastra. Had Arjuna used it against Karna, Karna would have been killed.

  2. Here is the answer. Karin used the Vijaya Dhanush. It has more power than any other Dhanush. Arjuna ‘ s Gandiva is not as powerful as the Vijaya bow. Nobody really knows this, but Arjuna also possesses the Brahmanda Astra, but under the advice of Lord Brahma didn’t use it as it will create havoc. Karna didn’t follow Dharma and that is why he died in battle. If you say he is unarmed, then what about Abhimanyu when he was unarmed.

Moreover, whoever thinks of this as a bad comment are stupid and will soon die just like Karna. After all Karina was an evil demon called Saharsa Karavacha. He killed men and women mercilessly. As Surya tried to protect him as he was a devotee of Lord Surya, he was also born as a human. Fools, why do support a demon?:/

    1. First think Karna didn’t kill abhimanyu and second you said that abhimanyu was unarmed when he was killed. Then what about bhurishrava Arjuna who was follower of dharma ,Arjuna cut the arm of bhurishrava when he was fighting with satyaki from back side of bhurishrava when abhimanyu was killed by son of dushasana then he was knew that Dushasanas son would attacked on him But when Arjuna cut the arm of bhurishrava then bhurishrava wasn’t knew that Arjuna attacked on him then what is your opinion about that then you said that vijaya dhanush is more power full than gandiva yes its right but can you observe that Arjuna use a gandiva in Every war once he acquired the gandiva and on other hand Karna use his vijaya onely at final day of battle ,Arjuna also possessed a un destructible chariot Which had blessing of all gods and also lord hanumana and Krishna on his chariot also Arjuna possessed a 2 quivers which always full of divya astra and Indra gives the Arjuna a bramhkavach which cannot destroyed by any divyastra except bramhastra Arjuna used all this weapons in his Whole life on other hand Karna used onely
Vijaya bow and only at final day of war. When Karna used his vijaya at final day then Krishna realized that Arjuna coudent beat Karna whenever Karna had his vijaya on his hand and that’s why krishna ask Arjuna to kill Karna unfairly and Arjuna did that while Karna didn’t kill arjuna when had also chance to kill Arjuna but he was not coward so that’s why Karna didn’t kill Arjuna at that time because he wanted fair fight with arjuna

      1. If Arjuna had used Pasupata Astra and Bramashira, he could have defeated Karna. But God and Rishies would intervene and would have asked him to withdraw.

Also, Arjuna went as per Krishna’s decision – be it killing Karna, cutting the hand of Bhurishrava, killing of Jayadartha, etc. He din’t use his own discretion

You have a different perspective there are some virtues of karna through which people get inclined towards him irrespective of he was what in past the characters of karn signifies a danger form of human that was utterly loyal to his allies means he signifies loyalty and Danforth and a good person in evil where as arjuna is best of best student like topper of toppers hence he was given the Bhagat gyan there is a saying in hindu that Sherrnika doodh done ke patna me rehta hai similarly the bhagawad is lioness milk very precious and arjuna is the golden pot and i agree with you at present may how many virtue you have if you are on bad side and if had done bad deed you will end up repenting on it

  3. *****(Below is the funniest part, as it shows the real caliber of Karna
Karna had done a great feat for vanquishing Partha. Thou, When again the wheel of Karna’s car sank in mire and Karna was afflicted with calamity and almost vanquished on that account, when, indeed, that foremost of men became anxious to liberate his wheel, thou causedst that Karna to be then slain! If ye had fought me and Karna and Bhishma and Drona by fair means, victory then, without doubt, would never have been yours. By adopting the most crooked and unrighteous of means thou hast caused many kings observant of the duties of their order and ourselves also to be slain!’

the Pandavas headed by Vasudeva became ashamed.
Beholding the Pandavas filled with anxiety and grief, Krishna addressed them in a voice deep as that of the clouds or the drum, saying, “All of them were great car-warriors and exceedingly quick in the use of weapons! If ye had put forth all your prowess, even then ye could never have slain them in battle by fighting fairly! King Duryodhana also could never be slain in a fair encounter! Those four were very high-souled warriors and regarded as Atirathas in the world. The very Regents of the Earth could not slay them in fair fight! Similarly, the son of Dhritarashtra, though fatigued when armed with the mace, could not be slain in fair fight by Yama himself armed with his bludgeon! You should not take it to heart that this foe of yours hath been slain deceitfully. When the number of one’s foes becomes great, then destruction should be effected by contrivances and means.

Pandavas themselves agreed ha ha they are ASHAMED

  4. @ Mr Ashu,

Your statement-“There can be no comparison between lord Karna and Arjuna.”

My ans- Ha..ha…ha..Ha… way to go Mr Bhakt of “lord Karna”…. I hope you know that your “lord Karna” got defeated by Bhima/Arjun/Abhimanyu/Satyaki/Ghatotkach & even by tom/dick/harrys like Gandharvas/Drupad etc…..

Your statement-“Because had arjuna been so powerful lord Krishna would have never entered the war.”

My ans- When did Krishna ENTER the MB war ??? Krishna only pretended to help Pandavas in MB war, but Krishna did not fight for Pandavas in MB war…. so stop claiming rubbish…. On the contrary, Krishna helped duryodhan by giving him his Narayani Sena…. what a double game…!!

And where was Krishna, when Arjun alone kicked the butt of whole Kuru army(& Karna) at Viraat war…?? and where was Krishna, when Arjun thrashed Karna at Draupadi Swayamwar…??

Your statement-“Even after that arjuna could never defeat the mighty wArriOr karna in face to face battle.”

My ans- Pure Lie…. Miyaan, dont post baseless RUBBISH in this blog…. Arjun defeated Karna 7 times throughout MB in face to face battle…..

Your statement-“Arjuna shot the anjalika astra on krishnas command on karna who was trying to take the wheel of his chariot out of his.”

My ans- Pure LIE….. Prove this from original Ved Vyas MB(KMG) or DONT TALK IN AIR…..

Your statement-“And also on Krishna’s death when on command of lord Krishna arjun was taking all women and kids of dawarika to hastinapur….he was badly defeated by bheels ,,,,those were simple dacoits.”

My ans- Pure LIE again….. Arjun was NOT defeated, because firstly it was not a war but a Dacoity attack….. secondly, it was Bhills who ran away in the end…..

Further, let me give you some passages from original Ved Vyas MB(KMG), which were said by Kripa/Ashwattham in the honour of “Lord Karna”:

    Drona Parva:

“‘While Karna was uttering those words, Kripa,
the mighty armed son of Saradwat, smiling the while, addressed the
Suta’s son in these words, ‘Thy speech is fair, O Karna ! If words alone
could lead to success, then with thee, O son of Radha, as his protector,
this bull among the Kurus would be considered to have the amplest
measure of protection. Thou boastest much, O Karna, in the presence
of the Kuru chief, but thy prowess is seldom witnessed, nor, indeed,
any result (of thy boastful speeches). Many a time have we seen thee
encounter the sons of Pandu in battle. On every one of those occasions,
O Suta’s son, thou hast been vanquished by the Pandavas. While
Dhritarashtra’s son was being taken away ( as a captive ) by the
Gandharvas, all the troops fought on that occasion except thy single self,
who was the first to fly away.

In Virata’s city also, all the Kauravas, united together, including thyself and thy younger brother were vanquished by Partha in battle. Thou art not a match for even
one of the sons of Pandu, viz., Phalguna, on the field of battle. How
then canst thou venture to vanquish all the sons of Pandu with Krishna
at their head ? Thou indulgest in too much brag, O Sutas son ! Engage
thyself in battle without saying anything. To put forth prowess without
indulging in brag is the duty of good men. Ever roaring aloud, O
Suta’s son like the dry clouds of autumn, thou showest thyself, O Karna
to be without substance. The king, however, does not understand it.

*****(Below is the funniest part, as it shows the real caliber of Karna)

THOU ROAREST, O SON OF RADHA, AS LONG AS THOU SEEST NOT THE SON OF
PRITHA. THESE THY ROARS DISAPPEAR WHEN THOU SEEST PARTHA NEAR.
INDEED, THOU ROAREST AS LONG AS THOU ART OUT OF THE RANGE OF PHALGUNA’S
SHAFTS. THOSE ROARS OF THINE DISAPPEAR WHEN THOU ART PIERCED WITH
    PARTHA’S SHAFTS.”

    ———————

Aswatthaman also mentioned about the great Karna & said to Karna-

“Possessed with pride and insolence, thou braggest today of thy prowess,
not regarding any of the world’s bowmen in battle ! Where was thy
prowess and where were thy weapons when vanquishing thee in battle
the wielder of Gandiva slew Jayadratha in thy very sight ?”

    ———————

And you are right- There can be no comparison between Arjuna-the best & Karna-the faticharr….

Even after that arjuna could never defeat the mighty wArriOr karna in face to face battle.

  6. So Guys, at the end of all the discussions, we have all agreed to following facts of MB:

    1. Gurudakshina war: Karna RAN AWAY doom dabaa ke from Drupad……!!

    2. Draupadi Swayamwar war: Karna backed off from a fight with Arjun, hence defeated…..

    3. Gandharva war: Karna RAN AWAY doom dabaa ke, leaving Duryo in Danger…… what a coward & cheat friend….!!

    4. Viraat war: Karna RAN AWAY doom dabaa ke 3 times…… And on the 4th time, Karna was made naked by Arjun(after Uttar striped off Karna’s clothes)……. And it was Arjun’s Mercy that Karna lived to see another day…. what a pity….!!

    5. In MB war: Karna got defeated & RAN AWAY doom dabaa ke some 4 to 5 times from Bhima, 2 times from Arjun, 1 time from Abhimanyu, 1 time from Satyaki, 1 time from Ghatotkach…… what a poor warrior….!! Karna’s life was Spared by Bhima, Satyaki etc because of Arjun’s vow…..

    6. And in 17th day final battle, Arjun killed Karna in a fair one-on-one battle…..
    ——————————–

So it is clear that Karna was beaten by even tom/dick/harrys like Gandharvas/Drupad etc, hence this proves that Karna was just an Ordinary warrior & nowhere close to Arjun in warrior status…..

  7. Ultimate proof of Karna superiority over Arjuna
Arrived at the pavilion of the Kuru king, the Pandavas, those foremost of car-warriors, O monarch, dismounted from their cars. At that time, always engaged, O bull of Bharata’s race, in the good of his friend, Keshava, addressed the wielder of gandiva, saying, “Take down thy gandiva as also the two inexhaustible quivers. I shall dismount after thee, O best of the Bharatas! Get thee down, for this is for thy good, O sinless one!”
Pandu’s brave son Dhananjaya did as he was directed. The intelligent Krishna, abandoning the reins of the steeds, then dismounted from the car of Dhananjaya. After the high-souled Lord of all creatures had dismounted from that car, the celestial Ape that topped the mantle of Arjuna’s vehicle, disappeared there and then. The top of the vehicle, which had before been burnt by Drona and Karna with their celestial weapons, quickly blazed forth to ashes, O king, without any visible fire having been in sight. Indeed, the car of Dhananjaya, with its quick pairs of steeds, yoke, and shaft, fell down, reduced to ashes.
Beholding the vehicle thus reduced to ashes, O lord, the sons of Pandu became filled with wonder, and Arjuna, O king, having saluted Krishna and bowed unto him, said these words, with joined hands and in an affectionate voice, ‘O Govinda, O divine one, for what reason hath this car been consumed by fire? What is this highly wonderful incident that has happened before our eyes! O thou of mighty arms, if thou thinkest that I can listen to it without harm, then tell me everything.’
Vasudeva said, ‘That car, O Arjuna, had before been consumed by diverse kinds of weapons. It was because I had sat upon it during battle that it did not fall into pieces, O scorcher of foes! Previously consumed by the energy of brahmastra, it has been reduced to ashes upon my abandoning it after attainment by thee of thy objects!’
Then, with a little pride, that slayer of foes, the divine Keshava, embracing king Yudhishthira, said unto him, ‘By good luck, thou hast won the victory, O son of Kunti! By good luck, thy foes have been vanquished! By good luck, the wielder of gandiva, Bhimasena the son of Pandu, thyself, O king, and the two sons of Madri have escaped with life from this battle so destructive of heroes, and have escaped after having slain all your foes! Quickly do that, O Bharata, which should now be done by thee!
After I had arrived at Upaplavya, thyself, approaching me, with the wielder of gandiva in thy company, gavest me honey and the customary ingredients, and saidst these words, O Lord: ‘This Dhananjaya, O Krishna, is thy brother and friend! He should, therefore, be protected by thee in all dangers!’ After thou didst say these words, I answered thee, saying, ‘So be it!’
That Savyasaci hath been protected by me. Victory also hath been thine, O king! With his brothers, O king of kings, that hero of true prowess hath come out of this dreadful battle, so destructive of heroes, with life!’ Thus addressed by Krishna, King Yudhishthira the just, with hair standing on end, O monarch, said these words unto Janardana:
Yudhishthira said, “Who else save thee, O grinder of foes, not excepting the thunder-wielding Purandara himself, could have withstood the brahmastras hurled by Drona and Karna! It was through thy grace that the samsaptakas were vanquished! It was through thy grace that Partha had never to turn back from even the fiercest of encounters! Similarly, it was through thy grace, O mighty-armed one, that I myself, with my posterity, have, by accomplishing diverse acts one after another, obtained the auspicious end of prowess and energy! At Upaplavya, the great rishi Krishna-Dvaipayana told me that thither is Krishna where righteousness is, and thither is victory where Krishna is!’”

    1. I have seen many, all debates who is greater between arjuna and Karna. But don’t be hated, truth is arjuna is not though strong enough to face the three myths Karna, dhrona, bheesma. All of them lost due to their dignity & loyal to their king and his son. It was fate which determined their death . All died by thy Lord krishna’s duty of avenging dharma by any means.

So don’t compare or criticise the characters!!!!!!!!
Karna killed abimanu due to his wicked friend’s command , and at that time he was not at incharge. But he was amazed for abimanu’s bravery, only to release him from the torture of dhuriyodhan, and his fellow men at the sight of dhrona, he killed him.

Once dharma also mentioned that karnan is the foremost of all, also insults arjuna’s gaandeve over karna’s vijay thanks (the bow of Lord shiva). Hearing this arjuna was mad and tried to kill, but due to respect he chose to commit suicide. But Lord krishna again convinced him and his brother to save them both.

Lastly, I clearly announces that this story of epic has been lasting for hundreds and thousands of years in our country, so it is clear that there is no many original edition or materials for this epic which says similar narrative. The people who are favours high divinity over birth adamantly chooses the son of indhra due to their rituals & religious beliefs. But people who likes Karna is as only as the maharathi karnan defeated by thy fate nor any one else in the earth can’t win. This is the truth.

Karnan defeats the entire continent and make dhuriyodhana as an empire to world, that the maharathi was praised by dhirudhirastra that he overjoyed him none ever done by bheesma or dhrona.

Karna also was pleased by thy God krishna’s request to her aunt kunthi to save arjuna.

After success fully encountering arjuna to his defeat on the 1 6th day, on that night Lord parasuram request Karna to lose tomorrow’s battle with arjuna and accept his death as a repay for his sins, and he asks him this as his guru dhakchana. In that day(16th day of war) Karna fought with beema, they are both good at what they know, so they choose neutral weapon spear.
They fought all along the day and at end of the day Karna defeated beema and places the spear near his throat and says he has no intention of killing him. And leaves the field. But at karna’s death, beema disgracefuly dances.

Again who said Karna hasn’t got astray and sisters. It was arjuna who lacks that potential.

I personally recommends you all myself my friends to visit Wikipedia and search as Karna, you will get all his superior characters over your palgunan. Including weapons curses life and the original Karna paravala by many including your site ganguly’s edition mentioned as only a reference not as the original narration. There you will get correct script of archeological and historical narrative and reference.

So open your eyes and refer the copy what have given in their articles.

I am sharing this by truly referring it and karna hasn’t lost the battles that U have referred. In the swayampara his son was killed by arjuna’s arrow, and for that he praise the bramin and went to see his son. When he came to know that it was arjuna who killed his son he roars like a lion King and tell arjuna that one day he will kill him.
Unmistakable sent saliva purposely to engage Karna ‘s pride & tolerance.
Dhuriyodhana never wept for his brothers but he she’d tears when he saw karnan’ s body.

All these I refered are not in the ganguly’s translated edition but most of other translation like tamil and other ancient scripts which are originally posted by Wikipedia.

Oh my friends please respect and agree the skill of the son of radhe, don’t see talents from once status but their dignity to their duties.

I hope U all will refer Wikipedia.

All the astras like Vaishanastra, Narayastra, bhargavasta or Nagastra are given by God. So, he cant stop it. Because those astras should be respected.
Vaishanastra and Narayastra doesnot have counter astras.. So, Arjuna cannot stop it. So, do Vasavi astra. I believe rest of all astras he has countered it.

    — He is the most handsome, but next only to Nakula

    1. Karna’s Divyastra:
Bhargavastra (as powerful as Brahmastra) given by Parashurama (which is forgot the mantra to revoke to kill Arjuna)
Vasaki astra given by Indra for Kavacha kundala ( can be used only once and will not miss the target at any cost).. Killed Ghatokgacha
      Nagastra —
      Agnistra
      Varusnastra

      Arjuna Divyastra
      Brahmashira
      Pashupatrastra

The above two is enough to destroy any warriors.. Never should be used against human being other than for defence. (First used against Ashwathamma for defence and Pashupatrastra to kill asuras in other world, which destroyed that whole world)

Astra given by Indra, Varuna, Yama, Agni, and all the devas.

Anjalika given by Indra which killed Karna
Vayustra given by Vayu deva killed Jayadratha, since they were not able to kill by normal astras.

      1. Dear manjunath,
After narayanatra and vaishnavastra comes the no. Of bhargavastra.

These 3 have lord vishnu as presiding deity.
Then comes the no. Of pashupat having lord Shiva as presiding deity
        Then brrahmashira having lord Brahma

As proved by narayan and vaishnavastr incidenta, pashupat and brahmashira couldn’t nullify them. Proving that vishnu> Shiva, brahma

Remember Arjun after seeing bhargavastra exclaims it couldn’t be nullified and he will be killed if he enters the fyt and hence ran away. Proving that bhaegava> pashupat and brahmadshira Later fires brahmastra, which was punctured easily by bhargavastra, hence bhargavastra> brahmastra .

        Arjun=karna In archery

Arjun used gandiva( indestructible, having 100 strings etc.) and an inexhaustible quiver of arrows. Which gave him a heavy advantage to him over equally skilled opponents. That is why he has had fair share of victories over them.

But when karna and Arjun fought with equal bows none had upperhand

At last, afflicted with arrows, he was obliged to turn his back upon the field.

& Finally karna himself accepting Arjuna’s supeority:

    Narrative:

“‘Karna said(about Arjuna), “As far as I have heard,
    such a superior car-warrior has
never been born on earth! Behold
my prowess, since I will contend in
battle with even that Partha who is
such. This prince of Kuru’s line, this
    foremost of car-warriors, careers in
battle, borne by his steeds white in
hue. Perhaps he will despatch me to
    Yama’s abode today. Know, however,
that with Karna’s death, these all
will be exterminated. The two arms
of this prince are never covered with
sweat. They never tremble. They are
    massive and covered with cicatrices.
Firm in the use of weapons, he is
possessed of great skill and endued
    with great lightness of hands.
Indeed, there is no warrior equal to
the son of Pandu. He taketh a large
number of arrows and shooteth them
as if they were one. Quickly fixing
    them on the bow-string, he
propelleth them to the distance of
two miles. They always fall on the
foe. What warriors is there on earth
that is equal to him? That Atiratha,
    endued with great activity, with
Krishna as his ally, gratified the god
Agni at Khandava. There, on that
    occasion, the high-souled Krishna
    obtained his discus, and Savyasaci,
the son of Pandu, obtained his bow
    Gandiva. There that mighty-armed
one, endued with might that knows
no decay, also obtained his terrible
car unto which are yoked those white
steeds, as also his two great
    celestial and inexhaustible quivers,
    and many celestial weapons, from
the God of Fire. In the region of
    Indra he obtained his conch
    Devadatta and slew innumerable
Daityas, and all the Kalakeyas. Who
is there on earth that is superior to
him? Possessed of greatness of soul,
he gratified Mahadeva himself in fair
fight, and obtained from him the
    terrible and mighty weapon Pasupata
that is capable of destroying the
three worlds. The several Regents of
the world, united together gave him
    their weapons of immeasurable
energy, with which that lion among
    men quickly destroyed in battle
    those united Asuras, the
    Kalakhanjas.

    So also, in Virata’s city,
moving on a single car he
vanquished all of us, and snatched
from us that wealth of kine, and took
from all the foremost of car-warriors
    (portions of) their garments.
    Challenging that foremost of
Kshatriyas, that hero having him of
Vrishni’s race for his ally, that
warrior who is endued with such
energy and such attributes, I regard
myself, O Shalya, to be the foremost
of persons in all the world in point
of courage. He is, again, protected by
that Keshava of great energy, who i
Narayana himself and who is without
    a rival, that high-souled Vasudeva,
    that ever-victorious Vishnu armed
with conch, discus, and mace, whose
    attributes all the world united
    together, cannot (in narrating)
    exhaust in 10,000 years. Beholding
the two Krishnas together on the
same car, fear entereth my heart
together with courage. Partha is the
    foremost of all bowmen!

    OTHER MISCONCEPTIONS:

Misconception No 1-Indra made Karna weaker by requesting karna to offer his kavach kundal as alms(Daan):

About the kavach kundal of karna better get to know that even if shakuni or even blind dhritrashtra had that kavach kundal nobody not even demigods can penetrate his kavach..the fact ofthe matter is that having impenetrable kavach kundal makes karna invincible in battle & battle will become one sided so karna having deprived of his kavach kundal makes the battle equally challenging for both karna & arjuna & not one sided…So having kavacha kundal will definietly make you invincible in battle but wont show your archery talent! So having or not having kavach kundaal does’nt make you great archer & it simply weaken your defence & most important of all it doesn’t show your archery talent!!

Misconception No 2-Kunti saved Arjuna:Moreover I laugh at somebody claim that kunti saved arjuna even though karna only promised to kunti he would spare all 4 pandavas except Arjuna as Karna was determined to kill Arjuna even though knowing Arjuna was his younger uterine brother..On the other gand arjuna gandiva fell from his hand & he cried for fraticide he had done after karna death after kunti desclosed of karna reality as his elder brother to arjuna & after dat Arjuna developed great affection for karna last suviving son named Vrishaketu, & personally arjuna trained him & took utmost care of him.. This is Arjuna!!

Misconception No 3-Brahmin’s curse caused Karna’s defeat:

Now coming at somebody’s claim that brahmin curse for karna..Let me tell you Arjuna didnt gave him that shap so why you blame arjuna..it was his destiny that even Arjuna cant change..in gitaopdesh lord vasudev showed arjuna his vishwaroopam in which karna alongwith all kaurava commanders were engulfed by lord krishna bigg mouth which arjuna saw..everybody knew those on path of adharm are sure to get defeated & stop blaming arjuna for that!

Misconception No 4-Arjuna did Adharm by cheatfully killing Bhishma:

you all are wrong again mate…If you read mahabharata properly Shikhandi in her previous birth as Amba has a boon from lord Shiva that in her next birth as shikhandi, she will be the reason for Bhishma death & Krishna himeslf enginered Bhishma death by arranging Shikandi behind Arjuna after Bhishma himself told the way of his death to pandavas..so u all better stop blaiming Arjuna for that..this was lord shiva boon that was bound to happen.& according to u Arjuna causing Bhishma death was unjust..but dear it was again lord Shiva boon that Shikandi obtained in her previous birth & dats the truth which ur ego cant change! This was bound to happenn..& if you still call this as Adharm then better blame lord shiva & lord krishna both..argue with gods then..u can assume however whatever u want in ur own version of mahabharata written by urself!but in actual mb,sorry mate dis doesnt happen dude.. accept that!

Misconception No 5-Karna forgot Mantra due to Parshuram’s curse:

Now coming to your point dat karna forgot mantra for brahmastra invocation..better read the last part sec 90-91 of Karna Parva. It was CLEARLY mentioned that Karna after initial struggle karna was able to recall mantra for brahmastra which he invoked & directed at arjuna which was quenched by another Brahmastra fired by Arjuna..

Misconception No 6-Arjuna being the greatest archer cant defeat Drona & Drona has to be killed by Adharm:

First of all if you all read Mahabharat properly in Drona Parva you will get to know that Dronacharya has invoked a terrible weapon nullyfying divine system known as “BRAHMADANDA” also called the stick of Brahma..It wasn’t actually a weapon for offensive purpose but its for defence purposes only & it has the divine power of all 7 Saptarishis & it literally nullified all weapons of Pandavas..It has the power to nullify the Brahmastra also as once Brahmastra of Great Sage Vishwamitra was nullified by Brahmadanda only!!At last Lord Krishna adviced Pandavas the way which was indeed not dharmic to kill drona but remember Drona also was the chief responsible for Abhimanyu’s merciless cowardly killing by Adharm even though he was the only eldest & most respected person after Bhishma’s fall..So he has to receive back the fruit of his actions!

MAHADEV SHIV HIMSELF ACCEPTED ARJUNA SUPERIOTY WHEN LORD SHIVA FOUGHT A DUEL WITH ARJUNA IN HUNTER DISGUISE WHEN ARJUNA DID SEVERE PENANCE ON HIS TWO THUMBS OF HIS FOOT TO OBTAIN PASHUPATASTRA FROM LORD SHIVA..ARJUNA WAS CALLED NARA & HE WAS THE MOST IDEAL MAN HIMSELF & LORD KRISHNA HIMSELF ACCEPTED IN GITA PRAISING HIS MORAL CHARACTER!READ WHAT MAHADEV HAS TO SAY ABOUT ARJUNA..IF YOU WANT I CAN POST ENTIRE NARRATIVE!!

& EVEN IF FOR ANY REASON YOU WANT TO ARGUE WITH LORD SHIVA REGARDING ARJUNA PROWESS,THEN YOU ARE MOST WELCOME!!

karna himself praised arjuna that everytime he cut thread of bow arjuna in such a speed rejoin his thread that karna cant notice..this is clearly memtioned in karna parva..for god’s sake read carefully..Moreover Arjuna wasnt responsible for karna shaap so why do u blame arjuna..why dont you people dont notice how abhimanyu single handedly hold at bay 5 kaurava generals simultaneously including karna when he was chariotless!!

Moreover karna himself said to kunti(in ved vyas version) & to shalya ( in some telugu version) dat anybody except Mahadev Shiva would fear to fight arjuna wid krishna as his charioteer!

Arjuna didnt use the irrestible & unfailing “Pashupata Astra” on karna & neither Arjuna used the deadly “Brahmasirha astra” on karna because it will have caused unimmaginable destruction which Arjuna was against..Surely karna would have dispatched to yamaloka if pashupatastra or brahmasirhastra was used on karna!!

Karna also failed to stop Arjuna from killing Jayadratha(The person responsile for Abhimanyu’s killing)

Even Satyaki & Bheem gave sleepless nights to Karna!

Arjuna wasnt even seduced by queen of all Apsaras Urvashi whom even great rishis cant resist..Arjuna has an unmatched control of lust & respect for women which draupadi & krishna themselves praised! But what karna did-Karna encouraged cheer haran of draupadi & called draupadi A PROSTITUTE(VAISHYA)..God Krishna doesnt like anybody without any reason!!

Indeed Karna was the greatest human being that took birth on Earth & this was accpted by Lord Krisna himself & his daanvir nature & absolute loyality & friendship to Duryodhan was widely praised in three worlds & he also has to undergo great miseries & humiliation as “Suta Putra” & was denied his basic rights & motherly love & I am not doubting on his moral character indeed! But as far as arhery was concerned he was definietly a step behind Arjuna as Arjuna himself was NARA(Arjuna & Lord Krishna was called as NARA NARAYANA)..So nobody in three world could beat him..

So please stop unnecessarily criticising Arjuna everytime on public domain & stop giving sympathy votes to Karna!

    Jai Hind..
    satsriyakal..

You cannot compare Sunil Gavaskar with Sachin Tendulkar but with Viv Richards….Sunny faced the most deadliest of pace attacks in his era w/o any batsman friendly rules but Sachin scores over him purely on stats.

If Ricky Ponting and Sachin are compared does it make either one inferior? I do not think so. If Big B has longevity in superstardom then it does not negate the phenomenon called Rajesh Khanna..! Every success has its own specific circumstances – positives as well as negatives.

Arjun was talented supported and promoted by all and sundry. Karna was ill-fated and ridiculed character who positioned himself at par with Arjun purely on his own merit.

    2. Dear Me,

I can feel your like for Arjun in your comment above…
Here are my answers to ur “Misconceptions”
1 -> An invincible armour makes you really invincible…
Arjun had the advantage of Krishna as the armour, else he could hardly see the end of the battle.
One narrative tells that after the battle(18 days), Krishna told arjun to jump out of the chariot and did so himself before the chariot burnt to ashes. Krishna then clarifies saying that it was only his presence that held the chariot in place. To ur comment on establishing equality, i’d agree if Krishna ewas removed from the field. Why,Arjun was shot dead by babruvahan when he refused to bring along krishna!

2-> Kunti did try to save the Pandavas, not just arjuna.
Karna’s reply -> ” I shall spare all the remaining pandavas except for arjun(reasons as i see below).”
Kunti’s request -> “So be it. atleast refrain from using a weapon twice(because of which the nagastra that was so deadly wasn’t used”(shows Karna sticks to his words).
3& 5 -> exactly arjuna cant be blamed, but they were drawbacks on Karna’s side.
If you read through the part of Arjuna’s vist to Alakapuri(swarg), urvashi curses him to lose his manliness forever and then amends the duration to 1 year(iupon indra’s request). Unfortunately for Karna, he had no one to help him during the situation.
Nope He never remembered anything on the battlefield and he knew that this was coming which is why he asked for the shakti from indra. But, again, ghatotkacha’s presence spoiled the plan.
And my dear frn, 2 bramhastra’s dont cancel each other. They’ll just destroy the entirety.
Same thing with Narayani astra.(used by ashwattama & arjuna)

4-> It’s exactly unfair. If Amba has the ability to kill Bhishma as shikandi, tell him to do so. Bhishma only advices the pandavas that he wouldn’t fight a woman.
There was no need to get arjuna in the battlefield with shikhandi shielding him.
Shikhandi could have rather shot bhishma.

      6. I have no answer to this. Maybe you are right.

Karna says “anybody except Mahadev Shiva would fear to fight arjuna wid krishna as his charioteer!”
Yes, here the thing to be noted is Arjuna is NOT alone. He has krishna.
Furthermore, the only one as capable at charioteering as Krishna was Shalya, maternal uncle for Pandavas. He was sought for help and discouraged Karna till the end, refused to help him in lifting the chariot and praised arjuna’s glory.

And regarding Lust, never compare Arjuna and Karna.
Arjuna refrained himself from Urvashi, only because she was logically an ancestor.

Karna’s encouragement of Draupadi’s dishonor was fuelled by the fact that he was dishounored at her swayamvar ceremony just because he was not of (known) royal birth.
Throughout his life, he lived to make himself better than Draupadi’s beloved, arjuna.
And finally when kunti comes to request for the pandavas lives, she offers at peace treaty of sharing the knigdom.Even Draupadi.

But Karna refuses saying that he cant give up frnship and become a traitor. That’s self restraint.
He further adds that he knows Su(NOT Dur) yodhana’s acts to be unworthy of protection but he cant overcome the gratitude he feels for Suyodhana.
Coming to self restraint, Arjuna had Draupadi, Subhadra, etc as his wives.
      Karna had only Vrushali.

Even Krishna at a time tells Draupadi(wen she asks y she was abused at the court) that it was her own actions that led to this. Had she allowed Karna to participate in the contest, he would have won her and never have left her unprotected. So Krishna himself acknowledges Karna’s skill.

And Finally, during the last minutes of Karna’s life, Krishna takes arjuna to Karna and asks for some wealth to which Karna readily gives. rememer the blood stained offereing was NOT acceptable to Krishna, so Karna washes it from Patala ganga(the effect of the curse has now diminished) before offering it again.

Arjuna, on the other hand, cried out that the vile person is dead to which krishna explains Karna’s weak points including the curses, indra, etc.

    4. First and foremost winners write the history not those who lost their lives in the war.
Secondly Arjun never killed anyone in any fair manner, neither Bhisma, Dhrona, Bhagadatta or Karna… In every occasion its a trick or tantrums not by his skill..

If Arjuna is all capable he would have asked Lord Krishna I will fight this war , if I die trying justice, you took over the war because you are the god and you are supposed to be not taking any sides — good or evil god should not take sides of human beings.

If Arjun was capable he would have never complained anytime some one like Karna, Ekalyav wanted to learn Archery.

what happened in Virad yuth Arjun used divyastras esp Mohanastras which make enemy in a fickle mind and make them hazy, and illusions he can used it only when his life was in trouble. since his part of job is to protect the wealth of his guardian nation- that was not a declared war… he just protect the calves from the thieves .. when enemy is mesmerized you can beat them. that was not victory you cant kill an enemy while he is sleeping that’s why he didn’t kill them.

you can’t use Mohanastra in Warfield, its shame (cowardice)also it mesmerizes your own troops.

war with Ghandarva’s was a drama created by Indra to make his son superior, with his friend Gandharva king chitrasena , Ghandharvas are inferior to Devas and under Indra dev’s control. they took a illusionary war same as Indrajit did against lord Ram and laxman he fainted them too. does it means he was powerful than Lord Ram..Karna killed them all but lord indra spilled the droplets of Amrith and give them life again.. Even though karna was highly toxic with Alcohol consumption not prepared far a war but on a picnic fun. He took an oath afterwards not to consume Alcohol or meat till killing Arjun. while in toxic condition you are not supposed to invoke celestial Astras. he would have wiped out the entire race of Ghandharvas with his Bhargava Astra alone. since he was toxic with women and wine he didn’t invoke because of the respect to his Guru.

Arjun never met Karna in the battlefield till Gadothkach was stained. Krishna Averted so many times including the Jeyathradh incident.

If you are really capable why you sitting behind the supreme lord, how many astras from Karna was nullified but Lord Krishna and lord Hanuman.. how many times salya was stood up against karna in the middle of the war. salya was actually a spy for Yudhister.

Karna cut Arjuns Bow strings again and again Arjun was not able todo at least once.
why you have to kill your enemy if you consider you are superior, because previous day was Arjun was tied by Karna and his generosity he didn’t kill Arjun ..

Karna knows who is Arjun but Arjun wasn’t — Even Bhim attacked Karna and made him to faint, because he wanted to kill karna but karna has to defend himself but not to kill Bhim as he give his words to his mom ,except Arjun I won’t kill any of my brothers except Arjun.

Put your thoughts in a different way , what if its not Krishna who drove Arjuna’s Rath on that day.

whatever happens inside chakravyuh no one knows exactly , but I know karna give a sword to Abhimanyu to fight …

and Abhimanyu was killed by the son of Dhisasan not by karna,,,

Anything that born with his body is his part of body not an attachment, it was his Ankh not an add on.. Indra begged karna for that means it has played a huge role in karnas’ life as a savior . That’s why lord surya gave this to his son. but crooked Indra took it away, gift of a father to his son.

Winner is not always really skill full or dharma. They won the war with all the Adharma’s done..

If Arjun won the war his brother will be king, if Karan won the war what’s there for him. if he killed Arjun easily Dhryodhan would have killed Bhimsen. Aswathama would have finished rest of the Pandavas.. Once again every one will blame karna because he killed his own brother..

      1. Dear VK

I suggest u to share ur views on Greatest Warrior of All time page also in this blog. You wl hv good discussion on who was better – Arjun or Karna?

      2. Wow great manipulator buddy but let’s go to ur facts again:- vurat yudh Karna fled before Arjun used that astra that also because all the maharathi’s started attacking together

If you read Mahabharata every time u guys fight is for 17 day when karna has invincible Vijay dhanush that even narayan CNT defeat wow if you give shakuni also that than shakuni becomes greatest archer in world…

Draupadi marriage :- when karna didn’t knew it was Arjun as brahmin read what happened of their battle. Karna accepted defeat and went from there. Still karna the best …..before typing or shouting think with logics its about archery talent not about life struggles yes Arjuna was better than karna everyone accepted it bhism drona mahadev Krishna even duryodhan

        1. Ankit,

Virat Yudh – Karna w/o divine Kavach Kundal & Vijay bow. Arjun freshly back from Swarg with all resources in tow including celestial weapons, chariot, Hanuman protection etc..yet Karna kept challenging him and Arjun could not kill him

Karna fought with Vijay bow once he became Senapti, I believe. In his earlier fights we do not find mention of his bow anywhere

Draupadi marriage: Karna NEVER accepted defeat. He stopped attacks after matching him shot for shot for he did not want to infuriate another brahmin and invite some other curse after Parasurama and poor brahmin whose calf he killed accidently

As far as archery talent goes –

Karna alone won whole India for Duryo…..unlike 4 Pandavas who had to collectively go in different directions during Rajsuya yaga

Arjun could not save Yadav ladies from Bhills, had to be saved by celestial rishis during ashwamedha campaign with sindhu warriors and got killed by Babruvahan

        2. Bro Ankit, you should know one thing first that mortal who is born in dwapara yuga was karna only. No one can wield vijaya bow except karna. Karna is the only one and only mortal born in dwapara yuga, who has capability of using vijaya bow. Karna is the only mortal, who used vijaya bow.

Oh my friends please respect and agree the skill of the son of radhe, don’t see talents from once status but their dignity to their duties.

what Lord Krishna think of karna’s bravery:

Krishna said(To Arjuna):.I swear by Truth to thee, O friend, that my limbs are burning at the thought that while the son of Subhadra was thus advancing, consuming the hostile army with his shafts, even on that occasion the wicked-souled Karna was engaged in acts of hostility to that hero,Unable, O Partha, to stay in that battle before Abhimanyu’s face, mangled with the shafts of Subhadra’s son, deprived of consciousness, and bathed in blood, Karna drew deep breaths, inflamed with rage. At last, afflicted with arrows, he was obliged to turn his back upon the field.

    http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m08/m08073.htm

    Jai Hind..
    satsriyakal..

it is not ARJUNA’S greatness KARNA got a dream on the day of his death that in the dream” LORD PARASURAMA appeared and said that his curse have been removed but he must die that day because DURYODHANA shouldn’t win the WAR so KARNA accepted it ..

It was mounted by HANUMAN he has been protecting it from all DIVYASTRAS
KRISHNA saved ARJUNA trice not only from KARNA but also from another warrior during the day of ABHIMANYU’S death
He has got a better protection than rest others in battle
after battle when LORD KRISHNA ordered Arjuna to get down from the chariot it burst down into pieces which says nothing can escape the wrath of warriors like KARNA and BHISHMA etc..
KARNA gave a word to kunti that he will not use same astra twice on ARJUNA
KARNA defeated mightyBHIMSEN in a sphere fight which is impossible for ARJUNA

he is as equally powerful as BHIMSEN
KARNA’S funeral was done by LORD KRISHNA with all his friends and family like DURYODHANA and PANDAVAS
ARJUNA died in the hands of his son later ressuructed by his wife, for once
he died on his way to Himalayas for peace he didn’t even get proper funeral

  15. It is not the matter of serious discussion guys. There is differences in our opinions but there isn’t any big issue between Karna and Arjuna. Karna was Arjuna’s elder brother. Arjuna would have accepted karna as a greatest archer in the world if he had told he was his brother already. If lord Krishna himself has praised the bravery of Karna, of course he was a brave person. But fact is fact..Arjuna vanquished karna in Virata war. Karna fled in Gandarva’s case. And Karna was even unable to help Duryodhana to give Gurudakshina. These fact are all true. Still everybody says Karna was a brave warrior. Nobody can decide the result of the war already so it was normal for anybody to have fear on mind and to take enough precautions if the enemy is like Karna. On top of that Karna was protected naturally so nobody can kill him so Indira had to ask for that Kavacha because he was willing to fight against Dharma. Had Karna won the battle the culprit Duryodhana had to become the King. Of course Nobody wants King like Duryodhana.

Having said that, Karna also had curse of guru Parasurama. Arjuna’s Guru dronacharya never used to get tired of praising Arjuna. So Arjuna also had the power of well wishes from all the elders. that he gained himself being humble, polite, respectful and gentle. Powers shouldn’t be compared merely based on bow and arrow.

If they both fopught on a fair ground without any advantage over the other,i would put my money on Karna.

Rudra pratap, When Arjun killed jayadrath he is said to used Pashupatastra, an astra of lord shiva himself, It has its limits and boundaries of usage so he obviously couldn’t have used that astra to all. And in Birat Yuddha, Arjun had used Sammohan astra and made them unconscious. It’s against the norm of the war to kill an unconscious warrior.

  18. Respected Nil sorry for a delayed reply , i would like to negate many of your questions.

    (1) Karna was a disciple of Guru Drona at first.

I am not blaming you here.
But whoever have wrote that Karna was an student of Dronacharya need to have a mental checkup.

    No logics in there,

This is very childish, may be an handplay of an amateur poet.

If you want reason for my belief i can give u also.
May it will make u change your mind towards Karna.

(2)During Ghandharvs incidence when Duryodhan was captured by them.

What Karna told to Duryodhan was best suited at that time.

Duryodhan was very adamant fool as we all know.

He was hellbound to commit selfimmolation.
    He was very egoistic,
he considered any help from Pandavas was a disgraced to him.

So what Karna did was an very smart move by him to calm Duryodhan.
He should be applauded for this not reprimanded.

    (3) Karna considered Pandavas as blood enemies.
He never did any harm to anyone else,
    Other than them
He had no softcorner for pandavas upto the time when his true identity was not revealed.

He treated pandavas as his swear enemies.

(4)About the lac grih incidence: It is very controversial and highly debatable.

Whether Karna actively participated in that evil conspiracy is not definative.

Yes i can’t excuse him for some of his deed but his good deeds clearly outweights his wrong one.

And his list of good deeds is very long.

And The character of Karna was way powerful than Dronacharya .
Yes u are right Karna should not be compared to Guru Drona.

    (5)Regarding Lord Parashuram curse,
Lord cursed Karna only becs he was not accepting to be a Kshatriya.
As he himself didn’t knew his true identity.

But Lord Parashuram gave him his Vijay Dhanush and Bhargav astra don’t forget that.
    Karna never pleaded for those.
He won’t give such highly potent weapon to an evil person would he?

They had different personalities but the common thing among them is that they knew that the Kauravas were going to loose the battle.( Duryodhana and shakuni or dushasana were quite confident of their victory.) That’s the reason why their names are taken in the same breath. Mandir se nikalne waala har aadmi pujari naheen hota aur sharab khaane se nikalne waala har aadmi sharabi naheen hota.

  19. It cannot be argued that Karna was the sworn enemy of the Pandavas. But was he in agreement with Duryodhanas evil conspiracies. BR Chopras Mahabharata says he did not like conspiracies. This is a conversation I have recorded in Gangulies Mahabharata which seems to tally with the serial.
Vaisampayana said, ‘Thus addressed by Duryodhana, Karna said, ‘It doth not seem to me, O Duryodhana, that thy reasoning is well-founded. O perpetuator of the Kuru race, no method will succeed against the Pandavas. O brave prince, thou hast before, by various subtle means, striven to carry out thy wishes. But ever hast thou failed to slay thy foes. They were then living near thee, O king! They were then unfledged and of tender years, but thou couldst not injure them then. They are now living at a distance, grown up, full-fledged. The sons of Kunti, O thou of firm resolution, cannot now be injured by any subtle contrivances of thine. This is my opinion. As they are aided by the very Fates, and as they are desirous of regaining their ancestral kingdom, we can never succeed in injuring them by any means in our power. It is impossible to create disunion amongst them. They can never be disunited who have all taken to a common wife. Nor can we succeed in estranging Krishna from the Pandavas by any spies of ours. She chose them as her lords when they were in adversity. Will she abandon them now that they are in prosperity? Besides women always like to have many husbands, Krishna hath obtained her wish. She can never be estranged from the Pandavas. The king of Panchala is honest and virtuous; he is not avaricious. Even if we offer him our whole kingdom he will not abandon the Pandavas. Drupada’s son also possesseth every accomplishment, and is attached to the Pandavas. Therefore, I do not think that the Pandavas can now be injured by any subtle means in thy power. But, O bull amongst men, this is what is good and advisable for us now, viz., to attack and smite them till they are exterminated. Let this course recommend itself to thee. As long as our party is strong and that of the king of the Panchalas is weak, so long strike them without any scruple. O son of Gandhari, as long as their innumerable vehicles and animals, friends, and friendly tribes are not mustered together, continue, O king, to exhibit thy prowess. As long as the king of the Panchalas together with his sons gifted with great prowess, setteth not his heart upon fighting with us, so long, O king, exhibit thy prowess. And, O king, exert thy prowess before he of the Vrishni race (Krishna) cometh with the Yadava host into the city of Drupada, carrying everything before him, to restore the Pandavas to their paternal kingdom. Wealth, every article of enjoyment, kingdom, there is nothing that Krishna may not sacrifice for the sake of the Pandavas. The illustrious Bharata had acquired the whole earth by his prowess alone. Indra hath acquired sovereignty of the three worlds by prowess alone. O king, prowess is always applauded by the Kshatriyas. O bull amongst Kshatriyas, prowess is the cardinal virtue of the brave. Let us, therefore, O monarch, with our large army consisting of four kinds of forces, grind Drupada.
without loss of time, and bring hither the Pandavas. Indeed, the Pandavas are incapable of being discomfited by any policy of conciliation, of gift, of wealth and bribery, or of disunion. Vanquish them, therefore, by thy prowess. And vanquishing them by thy prowess, rule thou this wide earth. O monarch, I see not any other means by which we may accomplish our end.’
“Vaisampayana continued, ‘Hearing these words of Radheya, Dhritarashtra, endued with great strength, applauded him highly. The monarch then addressed him and said, ‘Thou, O son of a Suta, art gifted with great wisdom and accomplished in arms. This speech, therefore, favouring the exhibition of prowess suiteth thee well. But let Bhishma, and Drona, and Vidura, and you two, take counsel together and adopt that proposal which may lead to our benefit.’ ( Here its made clear that Karna although may have been party to Duryodhans schemes in his heart of hearts really did not approve of them. Yes he was the enemy of the Pandavas but preferred open battle rather than shadyantra which tallies with the serial )

It because of lord krishna that arjun was able to kill the mighty karna.

  21. Great debate here guys, very informative. The only words true are of Lord Krishna. Many times in Mahabharat he has referred to Arjun as Sarv-shresht Dhanurdhar/mahabahu. However, Arjun’s overconfidence and lack of respect to Karn was his downfall at times. It also should be noted that Dropadi was granted boon from Lord Shiva that her husband will be equal to Lord Shiva himself in dhanurvidya so there’s no debate who was better bowman. The fact is that the war was between Krishna and Dritrashtr and Arjun the one representing Lord. i.e. Arjun vs Kuru’s. Karn joined the war fresh after 11 days confronting a tired Arjun who’s been on battlefield for 11 or 12 days facing Maharathi’s like Bhism, Dron & Krip. I don’t think its easy to say who was stronger or better between Karn and Arjun but there’s no doubt that Arjun’s deed over a period of time, whether in war or at peace, were always of dharma which makes Arjun a better warrior. Krishna is the one who decided how, who and when Arjun should slay. On final battle day, Karn had used all his might and knew he couldn’t defeat Arjun so he dropped his weapons and started digging out his chariot rather than continue fighting. If thats not a sign of a defeated warrior, I am not sure what is? Krishna didn’t want history to remember Karn as second to Arjun so he forced Arjun to slay Karn while he was off his chariot, therefore, always a debate who was a greater warrior.

    1. Slight difference of opinion. Lord Krishna has acknowledged Karna as an equal to Arjuna in mb.
Coming to draupadis boon it was metaphorical. It also said her husband would be equal to hanuman in strength. Ie 5 qualites which are not present in one man hence 5 husbands. The strength of bhima was not equal to hanuman although the boon said so. Remember he was humbled by Hanuman on one occasion. Arjuna himself was not equal to Shiva in archery. He was bested by Lord Shiva,
Warriors those days were of great energy. For them tiring was a non contextual factor. In the final battle Karna had rendered Arjuna unconsiousness. Yes arjuna had bested karna on some ocassions but please realize Sri Krishna too had protected Arjuna on many ocassions. He had made it clear to the pandavas at the end of the war. I can quote the phrases If you want.

So Arjun, Karna and Shri Krishna are all characters created by this fantastic storyteller.

What is important however is the lessons to be learnt from the story.

The victory of Good over Evil. Teh many facets of human beings, including politics, love hatred effection. Also it gives a great insight into the social practice in those ages. Swayamvar, Caste System, Multiple partner, Gambling, Soical norms etc.

As far as the characters are concerend I must admit I have Karna as my favourite, despite having lost the war (How can you win against Lord Krishna?) He embodies all the virtues that a human being should possess. It has nothing to do with the number of Divyastras he may possess.

Some people may see it as Myth, but how could all places like stated in Mahabharata exist in reality. From the mighty Himalayas to Kanyakumari, many signs of existence of Pandavas and the great war Mahabharata exist. I have seen many from my eyes. Go and see Indraprastha which is now known as New Delhi, go and see Hastinapur, see Gokul, see Govardhan, see Mathura, see Badrinath. I doubt if mere story could change the colour of the battle ground Kurukshetra, which is still red and shape India.

Yonder Karna urges forward the mighty car-warriors of the Dhartarashtras towards the son of Pritha with the weapons called Sthunakarna, Indrasjaha and Pasupata,” Quote end

here it says towards the son of pritha (arjun) (who has) weapons called Sthunakarna, Indrasjaha and Pasupata,” Quote end

here it means that arjun had those weapons not karna.

other thing about arjuna’s chariot burning. This chariot was given to arjuna by agni dev when arjun helped him to burn khandav van, so after mahabharat yuddha the purpose why it was given to arjun was fulfilled so it went back to agnidev, celestial weapons were not the reason, every night lord krishna left the chariot and went to sleep, why didn’t it burn then ?

As far as I remember I read some text wherein it was mentioned that Arjun’s Rath succummbed to flames only after the Divine Protecters left it for good…Protectors as in Lord Hanuman in Arjun’s Pataka (Flag) placed over Chariot and Lord Krishna after the war was over. So when Lord Krishna went to sleep at night, Lord Hanuman was still there over the Chariot as Sankat Mochan. I hope that serves the justification.

  24. So Mr Niraj, what is your justification of karna and all kaurav maharathis being defeated by arjuna in virat yuddha? and karna was defeated by chitrarath gandharva and he had to flee from battlefield leaving duryodhana in chtraratha’s capture and then arjun and bhim faught gandharvas and defeated them.
pashupat astra could be given only by lord shiva and karna never got any boon from lord shiva so he did not have pashupat astra, yet he had brahmastra and he tried to invoke it in final battle with arjuna but forgot the mantra due to guru’s curse. abhimanyu defeated karna and he had to retreat and later killed abhimanyu together with other maharathis. on 14th day when arjun was on jayadratha hunt he found karna in front of him, he then injured karna and broke his chariot, ashwtthama had to intervene to save karna.
srikrishna said this for karna only because arjun had a very low feeling of karna because of being him a sutputra while others he defeated he still respscted them because they were kshatriyas, lord krishna wanted arjun to respect him so he said this.
you said that Yudhishthira told Bhima that Arjuna was a vain boaster who thought he could end the war in one day hence he falls due to that fault.
the fact is that the kind of powers arjun had what he thaught was true but as i said earlier that their last journey was a spiritual journey and any kind of ahankar is not accepted there even if it’s a true thaught

in dharma and intelect bhishma is no less than yudhishthir. And bhishma said to duryodhan about karna that ” your friend (karna) is proudy, arrogant and talkative, the day he comes in front of arjun, he will be killed.
after arjun got pashupatastra from shiva he proceeded to swarga where he received all celestial weapons including narayanastra from gods and then he defeated asuras to help devas so your saying that arjuna did not have narayanastra is not true.
Karna being more powerful than arjun is an illusion which was created in medieval age by krishna bhakta people just to prove that without krishna’s help arjun could not defeat karna, and now these ISCON people are doing the same thing, but if anybody without any prejudice looks into the facts he can understand the reality.
It is true than without srikrishna it was tough for pandavas to win because arjun would never kill bhishma pitamah and guru drona, and when kauravas started cheating it was only lord krishna who could answer them properly.
bhishma is equally capable as arjuna and far more capable than karna, i don’t know why everybody here is trying to ignore him, even in his old age he was undefeated.

” Mr ALOK’S comments here are the best comments i ever got to read on this topic. He is absolutely knowledgeable and logical. you can disagree only if you fixed yourself to do so otherwise not. I have saved his comments in my notepad.

    1. Mr. Amarjit point no one Its has been already proven that KMGs Mahabharata is not 100 % authentic. I have already recorded the confessions of KMG in this very blog. So a further argument based on KMG automatically becomes immaterial becoz of this fact. Your point Krishna went to sleep after every day is then why did the chariot did not burn is non contextual. Because Krishna does not have to be present any where to retain his divine power. He was not present at Hastinapur but he invoked his power to protect Draupadi from Dushasana. Till Arjuna needed his support and chariot Krishna was there after the war the support is not required hence when Krishna revoked his divine power the chariot burst to flames. Your point on Shri Krishna falsely praising Karna so that Arjuna doesn’t become proud also is nullified by the facts I have mentioned in my previous post and also the Lord Repeating the same things even after the battle was over at Duryodhanas death. Even the celestials were showering flowers on Duryodhana at that time. Arjuna has fought non kshatriyas before ie rakshasas but Lord never praised them. A suta is not low caste for your information. A suta is a man born of a Brahmin woman and a khatriya man. Keechaka also a high ranked warrior was a soota. I stand by my statement that Arjuna hesitating to use divine weapons because of fear that it would cause universal danger is incorrect because I have already quoted examples to prove my point. When you are comparing 2 people in any field you have to focus on their best performances. In the final battle between Karna and Arjuna fought at their best. I have already nullified Mr. Aloks points. Yudhishthiras statement of various Pandavas is that Sahadeva thought he was most handsome ( fact is Krishna and Pradyumna were also as handsome or more handsome than him Arjuna himself was proposed by Urvashi hence its reasonable to assume that Arjuna was also handsome ) Hence ahankara means that when you consider yourself supreme and you are not. Lord Krishna declared himself supreme in Gita that’s not ahankara that’s the truth so if Arjuna thinks he is best warrior and he really is then its not ahankara. But if he thinks he is the best and isn’t then it becomes ahankara. My explanation on Virat yudha is as follows. The events before the Viraat yudha are like this. Duryodhan receives the news that Keechaka a strong man in Matsaya kingdom has been killed in a fist fight. He reaches to the correct conclusion that this feat has been done by Bhima. Duryodhan sends his friend Susharma the king of the Trigarta desh to attack Viraat anticipating that the Pandavas will come out of their hiding to defend Matsaya. As an added effort he along with Karna Bheeshma etc also followed up with an attack and tried to steal the cattle wealth of the Matsaya king. Duryodhans anticipation was 80 % correct becoz the 4 Pandavas came out to fight Susharma. Arjuna didnt go to fight Susharma because his disguise was very differant. While the 4 Pandavas were disguised as commen men Arjuna was disguised as a Eunuch thats why he was not allowed to enter the battlefield by Virata. When Virats son uttar kumar received the news of the Kaurava attack he had no choice but to take Arjuna – Brihannala with him to the battlefield that too as a charioteer as no one else was available. Hence its clearly evident that Karna and the other warriors were not expecting Arjuna when they were capturing the cattle of Viraat. Its recorded fact in the Viraat yudha that no divine weapons on Karnas part were fired at Arjuna where as he did fire supreme weopens like Bhargavastra Nag astra and Brahmastra in the battle at Kurukshetra. Same goes for Bheeshma and Drona as well. Thats the reason although they lost here could not be killed in a fair fight at kurukshetra. Reason is that when 2 divine weopens clash it has a very harmful effect on the nearby vicinity. This is revealed when Ved Vyasa scolds Ashwatthama at the end of the was when he fires the Brahmastra. At Viraatas battle cows were there in the vicintiy – Cow as you are aware is a holy animal for the Hindus. Even with ordinary arrows Karna could have been diffident as in his younger days he had killed a cow for which a brahmin had cursed him. I applaud Arjuna for a good victory over Karna here but cannot safely say that this is an evidence of superiority. Coming to Abhimanyu according to Swami Vivekananda a maharathi is a warrior capable of tackling a large number of warriors at a radius of 360 Degrees. I have already shown in this blog many warriors attacking Karna. A maharathi does NOT need his bow also to fight. When the 5 Pandavas attacked Ashwatthama at the end of the war Ashwatthama too was unarmed. He picked up a small twig charged it with the brahmastra and fired it too the Pandavas. Hence Karnas cutting Abhimanyus bow cannot be sanctioned as a serious offence. The killing of Abhimanyu was done by dushasanas son who under normal circumstances was no match for Abhimanyu but Karna and drona created those circumstance. Hence Karna is guilty to that extent only. The other version to the Gandharvas is that Duryodhan was with his body guard at that time Karna was not present. This is recorded in the teachings of Sister Nivedita who was the disciple of Swami Vivekananda. Explanation for Karna or for that matter Drona not defeating Abhimanyu is as follows A disciple of Sri Parshurama before getting his training takes a pledge not to kill the following. An unarmed man. A eunuch or a woman. A warrior not eager to fight and a person who is the only son of his mother ie eklauta putra. Bheeshma has revealed this information to Yudhishthira and on the 10th day dropped his bow in front of Shikhandi. Karna too was a disciple of Parshurama and knew Abhimanyu to be the only son of his mother Subhadra. Hence he was fighting only to protect Duryodhan not kill Abhimanyu. Please realise that he cut Abhimanyus bow from behind did NOT make any lethal blow on the body of Abhimanyu from behind despite having oppurtunity to do so. Mr. Amarjit don’t forget Your favourite Arjun had cut of the arm of Bhurishrava from behind. Agree Bhurishrava was trying to kill unconscious Satyaki but Arjuna being an expert bowman also was capable of rendering Bhurishrava unconscious with his sammohan astra or even cut the weopen of Bhurisharava why cut his arm and cripple him. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Coming back to the explanation I know Karna killed Ghatotkach who was also an eklauta putra of Hidimba but Ghatotkach was killed by Indra shakti not any divine missile of Sri Parshurama like Brahmastra and Bhargavastra or nag astra which Karna had received from Sri Parshuramji. May I know your explanation of Indra coming to beg the kavach from Karna.
Coming to Ghatotkacha except Ashwatthama there is no record of anyone defeating him in Mahabharata and Ashwaththama was not a disciple of parshurama.

      1. Mr. Amarjit both you and I are ordinary mortals. Shree Krishna is God. His uttered statements don’t require proof from us. Karna himself was a mortal. But after what Krishna said about him Karna proved what Krishna was saying about him was true. Krishnas complete anaylisis about Karna was completely true right till his quality of respecting brahmins . A fact confirmed by an earlier incident when Indra came to beg the kavach disguised as a Brahmin knowing this quality of Karna. Coming to your ISKON comment. I agree to an extent that they too are not 100% authentic but they follow the Srimad bhagwat puraan which is more authentic than Mahabharat. A fact sanctioned by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who has said that Srimad Bhagwatam is more authentic than Mahabharata. The arrival of all incarnations of Vishnu have been predicted in the Vedas below are the predictions of Chaitanya mahaprabhus arrival.

  25. Lord krishna said to arjun that karna is either superior or equal to you because he (lord krishna) did not want arjun to be proud, as arjuna defeated karna so many times before mahabharat war that he was feeling overconfident about his victory, so to bring him out of that overconfidence and to make him serious about battle lord krishna said this, plus lord krishna is also spiritual guru of arjuna and in spiritualism ahamkar is considered very bad so he wanted arjun to be humble and consider himself on weaker side otherwise lord krishna knew that arjun is superior because he proved it so many times.

A question is asked about karna using celestial weapons and arjun not countering them, arjun had appropriate astras to counter them but those astras were not preferred in normal situations as they could cause lot of damage so arjun preferred not to use them. to counter nagastra arjun had narayanastra but he didn’t use it plus he had pashupat astra which was most powerful weapon but shiva himself said to arjun to try not using it for not enough reason as it could “destroy the world in blink of an eye”.
so arjun did not use these weapons but other warriors were not so great.

    1. Mr. Amarjit most of your points have been already discussed and answered in this blog. Your point on Shri Krishna saying that before Karna –Arjuna final HE said I rate Karna as your equal or perhaps your superior – the reason was that he did not want Arjun to be proud as Arjuna had defeated Karna earlier that he was feeling overconfident. This point can be easily nullified by following points. Arjuna at Kurukshetra had fought many warriors whom he had defeated earlier. Eg jayadratha , Duryodhana. There is no record of Lord Krishna declaring them as his equal. In rating Arjunas opponent as his equal or superior Shri Krishna starts and stops with Karna. Before the battle Krishna also said Karna was known as Vrisha ie sympathetic towards his enemies and Karna proved Krishna correct by not rendering Arjuna unconscious and not attacking him despite both Krishna and Arjuna making it clear to him that they wont respect the rules of battle. Second point is that Shri Krishna repeated this even after the battle of Kurukshetra ie when Karna was already dead and Duryodhana was dying. He further gave proof to Arjuna after the war when he alighted from Arjunas chariot and Arjunas chariot which was a divine chariot burst in flames. Even in the final journey of the Pandavas when Arjuna fell Yudhishthira told Bhima that Arjuna was a vain boaster who thought he could end the war in one day hence he falls due to that fault. Yudhishthira had reached the perfection as a dharmatma and a satyavadi at that stage. His analysis cannot be wrong. Your excuse for Arjuna is either 2 edged or non contextual. Let me anaylise your statement “ arjun had appropriate astras to counter them but those astras were not preferred in normal situations as they could cause lot of damage so arjun preferred not to use them. to counter nagastra arjun had narayanastra but he didn’t use it plus he had pashupat astra which was most powerful weapon but shiva himself said to arjun to try not using it for not enough reason as it could “destroy the world in blink of an eye”. Point no1 its already been proved that Karna too had pashupat astra and Pashupat astra is pashupat astra whether Karna is firing it or Arjuna is firing it. Point no 2 You say that Arjuna did not fire those weapons those could cause lot of damage so arjuna preferred not to use them. – These weapons were there with Karna also. He too had Brahmastra, Bhargava astra and pashupat astra. He didn’t keep firing them all the time and face temporary defeat or inconvenience hence by the same logic Karnas greatness also need not be hampered. There is no record of Arjuna posessing or nullifying any Vishnu related weapon. Arjuna was known to fire divine weapons at unarmed opponents also. Karna was unarmed and was killed by anjalika astra. When Arjunas opponent fires a super powered divine weapon Arjuna was known to fire its counter weapon without any hesitation if he possessed it. Proof when Ashwatthama fired the Brahmastra Arjuna without hesitation fired his brahmastra to answer it because he had the brahmastra. Brahmastra is also a powerful weapon which can cause a lot of damage. Were Arjunas hesitancy to prevent damage here?. When narayana astra was fired he had no answer that’s why he did not fire back. Many years after Pandavas had departed from the world
Ved Vyasa son Shukadeva also said the same thing to Pareksheet the grandson of Arjuna that without Shri Krishnas help the Pandavas were incapable of winning the war

      1. Two points must be understood:
        1. Karna is evil. period.
        2. Arjuna is superior to Karna 10 times! There are no doubts in this.

Only on the day of his death, Karna uses the Vijayrath and Vijaya bow, that invokes the boon of Parashuram. (‘That he shall be undefeatable when he has bow in hands and when he fights without jelousy’) This is why Krishna has to tell Arjuna to consider Karna is equal or superior to himself.

As regards other weapons, they must not have been used in the first place. Fullstop!!

In the last part, Ashwatthama fires Brahmasheer astra and not brahmastra… Get your facts right. Arjuna first hesitates to use the same as counter weapon, as it may cause dire consequences. But Krishna orders him to do so. Then again, he proves his superiority over Ashwatthama, by calling back the Brahmasheera; which Ashwatthama is unable to call back.

And your arguments defending Karna’s evil acts are akin to rewriting the story. Good luck with that!!

          1. I am no authority to enlighten someone. But I would give my reasoning for using the words that I have used.

He is the part of evil foursome (Chaturdustam) as described by Vyasa. Let me just give only a few (lesser known) examples.
            1. He is very much part of the plan to burn the pandavas in lac palace.
            2. He suggests Duryodhana to go and visit pandavas into the woods, so that they can get pleasure out of suffering of pandavas! (Goshala episode)
            3. After the Gandharva episode, duryodhana is ready to give up the kingdom to dushashan, even sakuni tells duryodhana to make peace with pandavas at this point. But its Karna and only Karna that convinces Duryodhana with his crooked thinking that Pandavas have not done him any favor, so its right to keep them to woods.
            4. Vyasabharata clearly mentions Karna as a demon incarnate. This is a good enough justification to my comment, as Vyasa works with symbols and Karna to him is a demon incarnate.
            5. His only motivation seems to be to kill Arjuna, and that too only because he is jealous of all the fame that Arjuna has, which Karna thinks should also come to himself. This motivation is clear when he refuses to stay away from fighting with Arjuna. Had he accepted the request of his mother and let off his jealousy, he would have been the greatest Pandava.
            6. Contrary to popular belief, Karna’s initial education in weaponry is under Drona. Drona only refuses to teach the secret of Brahmastra to Karna, the reason Drona gives is that brahmastra should not to used for personal goals but for the welfare of all. Karna goes to Parashurama only to obtain Brahamastra. But he lies about his knowing of astravidya and hence when identified as a trained warrior, he is cursed.
            7. In the whole MB, Karna even for once doesn’t tell Duryodhana to let off jealousy towards pandavas. Bhishma and Drona continuously asks Duryodhana to live peacefully alongside Pandavas (with half the Kingdom), but Karna never does that. So Karna has no moral right to be considered in the same league as Bhishma and Drona. It is pity that usually the three names are taken together!
            8. Please have a look at Kanik-niti at your leasure. ‘The four’ fully endorse the view presented by Kanik.

I don’t want to say that Karna didnt have any good qualities. Even duryodhana had many good qualities (Note that duryodhana never insulted Kunti). And Arjuna/Bheema had many bad qualities as well. Since all of them are humans, they ought to be bounded by both good and evil.
But still, it is up to a person to decide whether the good outweighs the evil or vice versa.

In my opinion, much has been made out of Karna’s character. Many incidents are tweaked in the movie/series adaptations and that paint a different character than what I perceive from reading the translations. There are indeed many versions of Karna, according to which source you follow. I prefer to rely on translations rather than novels/movies/TV serials, and only after that I have used the word ‘evil’.

Karna of BRC’s MB is good, Karna of mrityunjay is great; but Karna of Vyasa’s MB is evil.

(Chatur dushtam – Duryodhan, Karna, Duhshasana, Sakuni)

One more point that I would like to say is that MB for me is more a story of who is right and who is wrong, rather than that of who is weak and who is strong. It dosnt matter to us if Karna is stronger of Arjuna is stronger, but it matters to us whether Arjuna’s conduct/view is right or Karna’s.

        3. I didn’t notice this post of yours Mr Nil.

First of all these whole debate of supremacy is going on becs Arjun didn’t kill any of the warriors equal to his rank as per as standard norms.

          (1) First Bhisma ,Ashwatthama and Kripacharya all had control over their death but other than Bhisma, Arjuna never pleaded to them for clues of defeating them.

It was only Bhisma who gave all kind of discomforts to all the pandavas and their sons and supporters.

If Arjuna skills so much class apart then others he should have comfortably held Bhisma captive. Bhisma only had the boon of ichamityu not the boon of Invincibility.

(2)Arjuna was called the greatest warrior from the time of passing from Guru Drona school.
If he was really the greatest he needn’t have to wander from places to collect devine weapons.

This itself is acknowledgement to the fact that Arjuna knew very well Pandavas would face lot of serious threat from Bhisma, Drona Karna etc if they declare the war right after the dice game.

(2)You said Karna hold upperhand against Arjuna only becs he used vijay Dhanush on that day.
By the way Arjuna was not fighting with Chop sticks. He was using the famous devine bow Gandiv and inexhaustible arrows.
And chariot protected by Lord Hanuman and a charioteer Lord Krishna.

          (3) Arjuna’s life was protected Lord Krishna from Bhagaddatta. Otherwise he would have died on that day.

(4)During Karna parva the ten times superior warrior Arjuna was falling behind Karna in points. Karna thrased all the Pandavas such that they had given up all hopes victory.
Read any version it narrates the same.

now karna first he has to forget his all knowledge in his main fight,,,,
he has given his kavach to indra which was again krishna cleverty
he had not killed sahdev and yudhistir
he had used his one of main astra to kill ghatochkatch….
and yup if krishna was not ther then arjun was also dead which is mention

If not firing divyastras and cutting a sorry figure absolves ARjuna at Kurukshetra it also absolves Karna from Virata yuddha.

Bhima was the bravest of the brave and definately has registered upperhands in duels with Karna. But there are also records of Karna doing the same. In all fairness a duel between Karna and Bhima cannot be taken seriously in competency evaluation becoz both these gentleman had no intention to kill each other. Karnas licence to kill was revoked by mother Kunti and Bhima from his point of view could not kill Karna as Arjuna vow would be nullieifed. Coming to Arjuna before the final battle Shri Krishna said that I rate the son of Radha as your equal or perhaps your superior. Hence a debate between Karna and Arjuna should start in the note whether Karna was superior to Arjuna or equal to Arjuna . Karna being inferior to Arjuna has been completely rubbished by Shri Krishna

Mr. Aloks observations come from K. M. Gangulys translation. Ganguly’s translation is not authentic. below are the confessions of Sanskrit Professor K. Ganguly which have been recorded.
“The entire translation is practically the work of one hand. In portions of the Adi and the Sabha Parvas, I was assisted by Babu Charu Charan Mookerjee. About four forms of the Sabha Parva were done by Professor Krishna Kamal Bhattacharya, and about half a fasciculus during my illness, was done by another hand. I should however state that before passing to the printer the copy received from these gentlemen I carefully compared every sentence with the original, making such alterations as were needed for securing a uniformity of stylewith the rest of the work.Quoting him. I should here observe that in rendering the Mahabharata into English I have derived very little aid from the three Bengali versions that are supposed to have been executed with care. Every one of these is full of inaccuracies and blunders of every description. I cannot lay claim to infallibility. There are verses in the Mahabharata that are exceedingly difficult to construe. I have derived much aid from the great commentator Nilakantha. ” As you can see friends that Prof Ganguly himself mentions that he has erred and his version in his own opinion cannot be considered authentic. These confessions are already recorded in this very blog in section mahabharat ki ek saanjh. Anyway in a debate or a discussion you can use your opponents words against him hence I will be quoting from ganguly. ” Then Dhristadyumna pierced Karna with ten arrows, and the sons of Draupadi pierced him with three and seventy, and Yuyudhana with seven. And Bhimasena pierced him with four and sixty arrows, and Sahadeva with seven. And Nakula pierced him with thirty arrows, and Satanika with seven. And the heroic Shikhandi pierced him with ten and king Yudhishthira with a hundred. These and other foremost of men, O monarch, all inspired with desire of victory, began to grind that great bowman, viz., the Suta’s son, in that dreadful battle. That chastiser of foes, viz., the Suta’s son of great heroism, performing quick evolutions with his car, pierced every one of those warriors ( that includes bhima ) with ten arrows. We then, O king, witnessed the lightness of hand displayed by the high-souled Karna and the power of his weapons. Indeed, what we saw appeared to be highly wonderful. People could not notice when he took up his arrows, when he aimed them, and when he let them off. They only beheld his enemies dying fast in consequence of his wrath. The valiant son of Radha, armed with the bow, and as if dancing (on his car), pierced each of his assailants ( this also includes Bhima as his name is mentioned up there among those attacking Karna ) with thrice as many arrows as each of them had pierced him with. And once more piercing each of them, and his steeds, driver, car, and standard with ten arrows, he uttered a loud roar. His assailants( Bhima included ) then gave him a way (through which he passed out). Having crushed those mighty bowmen ( Bhima included ) with showers of arrows, the son of Radha, that crusher of foes, then penetrated, unresisted, into the midst of the division commanded by the Pandava king. Having destroyed thirty cars of the unreturning Cedis, the son of Radha struck Yudhishthira with many sharp arrows. Then many Pandava warriors, O king, with Shikhandi and Satyaki, desirous of rescuing the king from the son of Radha, surrounded the former. Similarly all the brave and mighty bowmen of thy army resolutely protected the irresistible Karna in that battle. And the Kurus and the Pandavas once more fearlessly encountered each other, the former headed by the Suta’s son and the latter by Yudhishthira.’” “Sanjaya said, ‘Piercing through the Pandava host, Karna, surrounded by thousands of cars and elephants and steeds and foot-soldiers, rushed towards king Yudhishthira the just. Cutting off with hundreds of fierce shafts the thousands of weapons sped at him by his foes, Vrisha fearlessly pierced through that host.. Others, finding their divisions broken, fled away. The Dravida, the Andhaka, and the Nishada foot-soldiers, urged on by Satyaki, once more rushed towards Karna in that battle, from desire of slaying him. Deprived of arms and head-gears, and slain by Karna with his shafts, they fell down simultaneously on the Earth, like a forest of Sala tree cut down (with the axe). The Pandus ( Pandus meands sons of pandu hence
all pandavas including Bhima and Arjuna ) and the Pancalas obstructed Karna, otherwise called Vaikartana, who careered wrathfully in battle like the Destroyer himself, even as people seek to obstruct a disease with incantations and drugs. Crushing all those assailants ( assailents include bhima ) Karna once more rushed towards Yudhishthira, like an irresistible disease unchecked by incantations and drugs and (propitiatory) rites. At last checked by the Pandus, the Pancalas, and the Kekayas, all of whom were desirous of rescuing the king, Karna could not succeed in passing them over ( here its sanction that it took many warriors including the pandus to stop Karna ). Then many foremost heroes amongst the Pandavas, desirous of rescuing the king, rushed in wrath towards Karna and began to grind him with their arrows. Satyaki and Chekitana and Yuyutsu and Shikhandi and the sons of Draupadi and the Prabhadrakas, and the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva) and Bhimasena and the Karushas, Matsyas, the Suras, the Kaikayas, the Kasis and the Kosalas, all these brave heroes, endued with great activity, assailed Vasusena. The Pancala prince Janamejaya then pierced Karna with many arrows. The Pandava heroes, armed with diverse kinds of arrows and diverse weapons and accompanied by cars and elephants and steeds, rushing towards Karna, encompassed him on all sides, from desire of slaying him. Thus assailed on all sides by the foremost of Pandava warriors, Karna invoked into existence the brahmastra and filled all the points of the compass with arrows. The heroic Karna then, like unto a blazing fire having shafts for its scorching flame, careered in battle, burning that forest of Pandavas troops. The high-souled Karna, that great bowman, aiming some mighty weapons, and laughing the while, cut off the bow of that foremost of men. Here in gangulys version you can see Bhima also being subdued by Karna. In my next posting I will show many warrior attacking Karna including the Pandavas.

Below is Karna valour extract from Ganguly. ” O bull of Bharata’s race, and supported by many Kuru heroes and many mighty Madraka car-warriors, protected Karna while the latter was engaged in battle with the Pandavas, the Pancalas, the Cedis, and Satyaki. Destroying that vast division with his sharp arrows, and crushing many foremost of car-warriors Karna succeeded in afflicting Yudhishthira. Cutting off the armour, the weapons, and the bodies of thousands of foes and slaying his foes by thousands and sending them to heaven and making them earn great fame, Karna caused his friends great joy. The son of Radha then, that crusher of foes, turning back from the pursuit, quickly covered Bhima himself with sharp arrows from every side. Then Satyaki, of immeasurable soul, O Bharata, placing himself on the side of Bhima’s car, began to afflict Karna who was in front of Bhima. Karna too, otherwise called Vaikartana, O Bharata, in that battle, resisted Bhimasena, and the Karushas, the Kaikayas, and the Srinjayas Sanjaya said, ‘Meanwhile Vikartana himself, resisting Bhimasena supported by the Pancalas and the Cedis and the Kaikayas, covered him with many arrows. In the very sight of Bhimasena, Karna, slew in that battle many mighty car-warriors among the Cedis, the Karushas, and the Srinjayas. Then Bhimasena, avoiding Karna, that best of car-warriors, proceeded against the Kaurava troops like a blazing fire towards a heap of dry grass The son of Radha, too, O monarch, singly resisted the Pancalas and the Pandavas and the (five) sons of Draupadi and Yudhamanyu and the mighty car-warrior Satyaki, in consequence of which feat he became the cynosure of all eyes.” Here I read Karna resisting Pandavas . Pandavas definitely include Arjuna as well.

        1. Mr. Alok has thrown out a challenge that Karna defeating Bhima is false
if you think otherwise, please provide me a reference from the epic – parva, khanda & shloka no. – dont refer to a secondhand webpage or book by someone who hasnt actually read the epic). I will quote the great sanskrit scholar C. Rajagopalachari. ( Rajaji as he was called ) Just for your knowledge below are his credentials “ In 1951, Rajaji wrote an abridged retelling of the Mahabharata in English,[115][116] followed by one of the Ramayana in 1957.[116][70] Earlier, in 1961, he had translated Kambar’s Tamil Ramayana into English.[117] In 1965, he translated the Thirukkural into English.[citation required] He also wrote books on the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads in English and Socrates, and Marcus Aurelius in Tamil.[118] Rajaji often regarded his literary works as the best service he had rendered to the people.[6] In 1958, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award [69] Rajaji was one of the founders of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of education and Indian culture.[119]. In 1959 the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan published his book: “Hinduism: Doctrine and Way of Life”. Apart from his literary works, Rajagopalachari also composed a devotional song Kurai Onrum Illai devoted to Lord Krishna.[120] This song was set to music and is a regular in most Carnatic concerts. Rajagopalachari composed a benediction hymn which was sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi at the United Nations General Assembly in 1967.[121]
In C. Raja Gopalacharis translation in chapter 87 titled pledge respected He makes it very clear that its Karna who spared Bhimas life. True Bhima did give Karna a tough time but in the end its Karna who prevailed.

Another statement of Mr. Alok is that Only time Karna comes close to defeating Arjuna is when he uses Nagastra, I am sorry I beg to differ . I will again quote from Ganguly. “Once more Arjuna pierced Karna in the centre of the chest with many straight-coursing and strong shafts made entirely of iron and equipped with wings of gold and each resembling the fiery rod of the Destroyer, like the son of Agni piercing the Krauncha mountains. Then the Suta’s son, casting aside his bow that resembled the very bow of Sakra, as also his quiver, felt great pain, and stood inactive, stupefied, and reeling, his grasp loosened and himself in great anguish. The virtuous Arjuna, observant of the duty of manliness, wished not to slay his enemy while fallen into such distress. The younger brother of Indra then, with great excitement, addressed him, saying, “Why, O son of Pandu, dost thou become so forgetful? They that are truly wise never spare their foes, however weak, even for a moment. The Suta’s son, when able, will once more advance against thee as before. Slay him, therefore, like Indra slaying the Asura Namuci.” Saying, “So be it, O Krishna!” Arjuna, that foremost of all persons in Kuru’s race once more quickly pierced Karna with many excellent arrows. Adhiratha’s son of broad chest looked resplendent like an Asoka or Palasa or Salmali decked with its flowery load or a mountain overgrown with a forest of sandal trees. ( here its sanctioned by Ganguly that Arjuna did hesitate for a moment but then continued attacking the unconcious Karna which was against the rules of battle ) Karna also shooting repeated showers of arrows, looked, with those arrows Recovering his coolness, and shooting many shafts that resembled angry snakes, Karna then pierced Partha with ten shafts and Krishna with half a dozen, each of which looked like an angry snake. Then Dhananjaya desired to shoot a mighty and terrible arrow At that time, when the hour of Karna’s death had come, Kala, approaching invisibly, and alluding to the Brahmana’s curse, and desirous of informing Karna that his death was near, told him, “The Earth is devouring thy wheel!” Karna became filled with melancholy. He then pierced Krishna in the arm with three terrible arrows, and Partha, too, with seven. Then Arjuna sped seven and ten terrible arrows, perfectly straight and of fierce impetuosity, resembling fire in splendour and like unto Indra’s thunder in force. Endued with awful impetuosity, those arrows pierced Karna and passing out of his body fell upon the surface of the earth. Trembling at the shock, Karna then displayed his activity to the utmost of his power. Steadying himself by a powerful effort he invoked the brahmastra. Beholding the brahmastra, Arjuna invoked the Aindra weapon with proper mantras. The mighty car-warrior Karna baffled all those shafts displayed in his front. The son of Radha baffled with his own weapons those of Savyasaci. Displaying also his own prowess, he seemed to get the better of Dhananjaya at that time. ( Here Ganguly sanctioned Karna as getting better of Arjuna ) At that time, O king, the earth swallowed up one of wheels of Karna’s car. Quickly alighting then from his vehicle, he seized his sunken wheel with his two arms and endeavoured to lift it up with a great effort. . Seeing his wheel swallowed, the son of Radha shed tears from wrath, and beholding Arjuna, filled with rage he said these words, “O Partha, O Partha, wait for a moment, that is, till I lift this sunken wheel.
For these reasons, excuse me for a moment, that is, till I extricate my wheel, ‘Then Vasudeva, stationed on the car, addressed Karna, saying, “By good luck it is, O son of Radha, that thou rememberest virtue! It is generally seen that they that are mean, when they sink into distress, rail at Providence but never at their own misdeeds. Then Vasudeva, addressing Phalguna, that bull among men, said, “O thou of great might, piercing Karna with a celestial weapon, throw him down.” Thus addressed by the holy one, Arjuna became filled with rage blazed up with fury poured arrowy downpours upon Karna. The Suta’s son then, for slaying the son of Pandu, took up a terrible arrow blazing like fire. When that adored shaft was fixed on the bow-string, the earth, O king, trembled with her mountains and waters and forests. Wails of grief, O Bharata, arose among the gods in the welkin. Beholding that shaft aimed by the Suta’s son, O sire, the Pandavas, with cheerless hearts, gave themselves up to great sorrow. ( Here even the gods and the Pandavas also realize that Arjuna is in serious trouble so Aloks statement that Karna was close to killing Arjuna only during nagastra incident is totally rebuffed by his own source ) That shaft of keen point and endued with the effulgence of Sakra’s thunder, sped from Karna’s arms, fell upon Dhananjaya’s chest and penetrated it like a mighty snake penetrating an ant-hill. That grinder of foes, viz., the high-souled Vibhatsu, thus deeply pierced in that encounter, began to reel. His grasp became loosened, at which his bow Gandiva dropped from his hand. He trembled like the prince of mountains in an earthquake. ( here its clearly evident Arjuna has fainted ) Availing himself of that opportunity, the mighty car-warrior Vrisha, desirous of extricating his car-wheel that had been swallowed up by the earth, jumped down from his vehicle. ( See the greatness of Karna. Despite Lord Krishna and Arjuna making it clear to him that they will not hesitate to kill him even if its against the rules Karna respected the rules of battle and did not attack the unconscious Arjuna. Aap hi bataye sahab Kya behosh Arjun pe astra chalane se kya Karna ko doctor ne mana kiya tha ? This precisely tallies with what Krishna said about Karna – He is known as Vrisha – because he is kind even to foes)
Seizing the wheel with his two arms he endeavoured to drag it up, but though possessed of great strength, he failed in his efforts, as destiny would have it. Meanwhile the diadem-decked and high-souled Arjuna, recovering his senses, ( here its mentioned Arjuna recovered his sense in other word now its cleared that Karna had rendered Arjuna senseless
and killing a sensless opponent is not difficult. Karnas danveerta
cannot be used as an excuse to glorify the Pandavas )

  28. Hi All

Bheeshma, Drona and Karna were the students of Lord Parashuram who is an avatar and not arrogant like an ordinary human teacher (Drona deliberaty held info from Arjun which is why he had to go to Lord Indra). Being bhagvan Lord Parashuram would surely have taught them everything including knowledge of ALL Divyastras and strategies (which is why Bheeshma was able to draw against him and Karna is said to be his equal). This also means that Bheeshma and Karna also knew about chakravyuh as well.

I beleive during the war divyastras weren’t used at first (except against individual powerful warriors) because they are basically WMD’s which could potentially destroy the whole world. However I believe that some of them were definetly used indiscrimently during the 14th-15th days of the war when it was basically a big slaughter.

    Here is why:
    Arjun’s divine chariot being destroyed.
The sheer number of soldiers killed in a couple of days (14th-15th days).
After Mahabharat nobody left alive with knowledge on Divyastras/Vimans,etc.

In the KMG version in the Stree/Shanti Parva’s the number of dead is around numbered 1.5 billion. This is way more then the number of soldiers in the armies. I think it includes civilians that would have been killed by WMD’s.
This would also explain why there are no archeological sites of any big cities like Hastinapur only small towns. (The only big city discovered is Dwarika).

Basically I believe that the world was destroyed during Mahabharat and Lord Krishna saved the Pandavs to rebuild it.

    Thanks
    Prahalad

I do not agree with you on this topic. The Divya astras that Arjun had belonged to regular devas. Arjun had Brahma astra and Pasupasat astra but they were not more powerful than Narayan astra. Narayan astra and Pasupasat astra were even.
Bhisma, Dorna and Karna did not just use those astras without knowing. Arjun was not the greatest and he did not hold the astras to glorify Krishna. It was other way around.
Bhim and Arjun were not the greatest. There were many warriors that were even greater. If Arjun and Bhim were greatest than, there was no reason to bend the rules. Arjun had to rely on Shikandi to defeat Bhisma, Dorna, Duryodone and Karna were killed by breaking rules. If these heroes were so great, this was not necessary.
Krishna had performed his lilas. He has said in Baghwat Gita that when Adharm is greater than Dharm than I come to this Yuug to balance the power. If these heroes were so great than Krishna did not need to come. Krishna made adharm stronger to give us lessons on what to do if we ever run into these problems.

    1. Sanjay,
I gave you actual references from the original transliteration of Mahabharata -http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07130.htm. Those episodes are from the peak of the war (Drona parva & Karna Parva). Bhima soundly defeats Karna 4 times and spares his life due to Arjuna’s vow. Remember, the very reason Karna challenged Bhima 4 times is to save the kaurava brothers who Bhima is massacring right in front of Karna. After his third defeat Karna gets so desparate that he starts to cry – as Bhima continues to kill one karav after another. All this is from the original text. As for Krishna doing his leela etc. – this is nowhere present in Mahabharata, the great epic only hints at Krishna’s divinity indirectly & rarely (e.g. in Gita). Glorifying Krishna as some sort of almighty Godhead might be great for a devout Bhakt, but it would definitely ruin the whole pathos of the greatest epic ever. Are you familiar with the concept of ‘Deus ex machina’?. Its the worst kind of plot device used in artificial stories, declaring Krishna as a Godhead who is driving everything as a Leela, basically insults Mahabharata and reduces it to a mere plot device. As for your other statements, I will repeat – these are from derivative versions – none of them as great or reliable as the original sanskrit Mahabhrata. In the original when Shiva endows Arjuna with pashupat, the narrator (Vyasa) is quite clear on it being by far the single greatest weapon of all – if I remember correctly Vyasa says something like this – “brahmashira, sudarshan.. can destroy the samsar(world/earth) but Pashupat can destroy the Brahmanda(Universe)”. As to your question on why if Arjuna was far superior to Bhisma, Drona, Karna etc. but still used treachery (on Krishna ‘s counsel) to defeat them, the answer is again quite clear to one who has read the original sanskrit text (pls. let me know if you understand sanskrit – will provide you links to the sanskrit version of the epic), here are the reasons –
1.Bhisma – see all my above comments, I said Arjuna is superior to Drona, Karna etc. I didnt say Bhisma. Mahabharata itself is not clear on who is superior among Arjuna & Bhisma, primarily because these two love & respect each other so much that they never ever fought each other seriosuly (remember in Viraat yudh, Arjuna defeated everyone except Bhisma). On 9th day of battle Krishna gets frustrated enough by Arjuna’s lack of any effort that he devises the whole plan for Bhsima’s fall next day. Other than this there is another factor of Bhisma having the boon from his father. One reason Krishna’s decision to kill Bhisma like this was not adharma is that it probably saved life’s of many ordinary soldeirs on both sides – who Arjuna & Bhisma were massacring instead of fighting with each other directly.

2.Drona – some of the above reaons apply to drona as well, both drona & arjuna loved each other and never once fought a serious duel. Krishna knew that Arjuna will fight with Drona with the intention of killing him. Meanwhile, Drona, under severe pressure from Duryodhana, was the first general to break all the rules of dharmayudh as layed out by Bhisma. He was the one to fire the first devastra of any kind in the battle. The devas immediately warned him against that but he still continued. Even if Krishna had somehow persuaded Arjuna or Bhima to fight Drona with intention of killing him (read Bhima defeating Drona, jayadratha vadh parva – http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07123.htm), such a battle would have involved celestial weapons of the Brahmastra class (Pashupat, Vaishnavastra, Brahmshirastra etc.). Such a battle would have destroyed existence itself (just like what almost happened in the ashwasthama-arjuna episode at the end of war). Hence, Krishna’s decision to kill of Drona in such manner was in accordance with Dharma, although to a less insightful mind it may seem like adharma. After all Mahabharata is all about the challenhe finding one’s true dharma.

3.Karna – Here we see the greatest distortions from the facts as present i the epic. First of all, as mentioned before, the much hyped incident of Karna defeating Bhima is basically false (if you think otherwise, please provide me a reference from the epic – parva, khanda & shloka no. – dont refer to a secondhand webpage or book by someone who hasnt actually read the epic). Only time Karna comes close to defeating Arjuna is when he uses Nagastra, in this case Arjuna is saved by Krishna’s chareeoting skills (and not some magical godly powers). But what counts not in favor of Karna here is that the Nagstra is not a weapon he aquired by merit. The nagastra was imbued by the life-force of a nagin whose mate Arjuna killed in khandava (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m08/m08090.htm). So basically, the nagin gave up her life in an attempt at revenge. Karna was just a means the nagin used. Also, if Arjuna had the advantage of Krishna’s supreme chareeoting skills, so did Karna with Shalya as his charioteer. After the nagastra, Karna tried every devastra in his arsenal, but was repulsed by Arjuna everytime. In fact, the very cause that Karna’s chariot sunk was because of the final ‘Raudrastra’ that Arjuna fired at him. By the time Arjuna killed Karna, the later was more or less defeated and was literally in tears (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/mbs/mbs08067.htm). Arjuna final blow was more like a coup de grace to a demoralized and despaired warriot.

We cannot depend on one book for the information. How do you know about the original MB. There are other MB also that were translated from Sanscrit. The one that you have read was translated by KMG for Queen Victoria so it got famous but that does not mean that it is the original.
You have said that Pasupast is more powerful. God is one so he has Narayan astra and Pasupast astra which are equal. In Baghwat Puran, when Bolenath shoots Pasupasat astra at Sri Krishna, Krishna counters it by Narayan astra. Since we are both going by different books, there could be no debate so I do not wish to debate with you further. Thanks.

If Pashupat astra is what you guys are discussing then let me tell you that Karna too had the Pashupat astra. Below incident reveals it
“O bull of Bharata’s race, and supported by many Kuru heroes and many mighty Madraka car-warriors, protected Karna while the latter was engaged in battle with the Pandavas, the Pancalas, the Cedis, and Satyaki. Destroying that vast division with his sharp arrows, and crushing many foremost of car-warriors Karna succeeded in afflicting Yudhishthira., Karna caused his friends great joy.
Karna too, otherwise called Vaikartana, O Bharata, in that battle, resisted Bhimasena, and the Karushas, the Kaikayas, and the Srinjayas
Sanjaya said, ‘Meanwhile Vikartana himself, resisting Bhimasena supported by the Pancalas and the Cedis and the Kaikayas, covered him with many arrows. In the very sight of Bhimasena, Karna, slew in that battle many mighty car-warriors among the Cedis, the Karushas, and the Srinjayas. Then Bhimasena, avoiding Karna, that best of car-warriors, proceeded against the Kaurava troops like a blazing fire towards a heap of dry grass The son of Radha, too, O monarch, singly resisted the Pancalas and the Pandavas and the (five) sons of Draupadi and Yudhamanyu and the mighty car-warrior Satyaki, in consequence of which feat he became the cynosure of all eyes.
Yonder Karna urges forward the mighty car-warriors of the Dhartarashtras towards the son of Pritha with the weapons called Sthunakarna, Indrasjaha and Pasupata,” Quote end
( here its sanctioned by Ganguli that Karna too had Pashupat astra. But there is no record of Arjuna having Bhargava astra which Karna had)
          best wishes

          1. How stupid are your arguments!!! This indeed makes me laugh!!! Karna had Pasupata?? Except for Bhagavan Shiva, only Arjuna had this weapon, and none other than him neither Bhishma nor Drona not Karna not Ashwa had it…. Nobody bothered to go to Mt Kailash to get the weapon either… They were just happy sitting in Hastinapur and enjoying luxury after sending Pandavas to exile….

But if this is the level of arguments and understanding of the pro-karna, I must stop coming to this site…

      2. Pasupatastra’ ability is already checked with vijaya bow. It is failed astra against holder of vijaya bow. I doubt whether it can bypass karna’s bow. Also karna can invoke bramashthra at any time to counter bramhadanda until before curse works out. But arjun does not have any weapon to counter bhargavastra, rudrastra, nsgastra & vasaviastra ….that is why Karna is stand apart far from all warriors in terms of superior..valour…strength…power

In any field “whether it’s a population of a country or an army the criteria is quality not quantity. Same is the case of divayastras. Arjuna indeed had divyastras but they were large in number ie quantity not quality. Basis on this he could render some fluke victories like Virat yuddha etc over the Kaurava army including Bheeshma Karna etc. But when Karna was at his best Arjuna did not have it in him to defeat Karna. The Mahabharata confirms Arjunas inability to duplicate his achievement at Virata. When Arjuna departed from the world Yudhishthira made it clear to Bhima that Arjuna was a vain boaster who said he could finish the war in one day hence dies becoz of that fault. His divine chariot also got blasted to pieces after the war when Krishna left the chariot. That means Shri Krishna was protecting him. When you are comparing 2 people in any field any profession you have to judge them by their greatest performances. If I am comparing Pierce Brosnan with Daniel Craig I have to see Brosnan at his blazing best ie as James Bond. I cant quote his performance in Mrs Doubtfire or Remington Steele. Similarly when comparing Albert Einstein with Isaac Newton I have to quote them at their greatest discoveries ie theory of relativity and theory of gravity rather than judging them by their high school projects. Arjunas incapability to nullify these weapons of Karna etc is proof that what head of the ISKON temple Srila Prabhupada said “Bheeshma Drona Karna where like timingala fish who could swallow Arjuna easily is completely true. If I am not mistaken he had said this on the basis of studying the Srimad Bhagwat puran

Thanks. I always thought the same but I wanted other people’s ideas. Lord Krishna had performed his lilas to send message to us all. Krishna created Pandavs and Kauravs. Lord Krishna made Kaurav warriors such as Bhisma, Dorana, Karna, Duryodone superior to Pandavs. But, Lord Krishna showed us all that Pandavs were following Dharma. Even though adharma seemed stronger, I ( Krishna ) is always on Dharma side and will make them victorious.
Lord Krishna could have defeated any warrior easily. ( Lord Krishna defeated Bhamasur and Banasur being lot greater than Bhisma, Dorna and Karna ) But, Lord Krishna makes Pandav break rules in order to win. This was a message for Lord that when you know that your enemies are cheating and you are fighting for what is rightfully yours, I will forgive you for breaking rules.
      Jai Sri Krishna.

      1. No battle, even between very unmatched foes is completely predictable, One great quality of the original Mahabharat is a sort of ‘genuine’ feel in its characters & story buildup, hence, most of such duels between heroes are messy, fast & rarely predictable. However, one thing the original Mahabharta text makes clear is the unmatched superiority of Arjuna in astra combat and unmatched superiority of Bhima in shastra (melee) combat. Anecdotes like you mention are derivative and not present as in the same form in Mahabharata. e.g. Arjuna can counter narayana astra with the even more powerful Pashupat, but won’t do so unless other means are exhausted (due to explicit warning he recieved against misusing devastras). Karna, Drona, Ashwathama etc. were well aware that it was adharma to use these celestial weapons against humans, but they did that anyway. This in no way makes them more powerful than Arjuna. One major reason for these non-canon anecdotes is to shore up the character of Krishna as someone omnipotent (while in the original he is more like a glorified middleman with brief sparkles of divinity) or that of karna. If you want to stick to the facts in mahabharat, Karna himself is no superior of Bhima in archery, let alone Arjuna. You can see ample proof of that in drona parva from the original text (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/index.htm – english transliteration). Here Bhima & karna fight 5 duels, the former roundly defeats Karna in first four and is forced to withdraw in the final one as he is already injured – having just destroyed the kaurava elephant army single handedly.

Krishna always said to Arjuna to believe in Himself but Arjun was Several times Rebuked by Krishna when Arjuna was fighting with Bheeshma,,as Bheeshma was unstoppable by Arjuna,,
Similarly he also said to him that its the Karan that Arjun should remain watchful of,Also in the last moments he said to Arjun to kill Karan,as Arjuna can never get this kind of Oppurtunity in Future,,It clearly means that Arjun can never Kill Karan if Karan is holding his Bow in his Hand,,,Son of SUN was matchless

Typical biased post of a Karna lover….. Mr Mohammed Sultan, i will give u one simple fact from Vyas MB which will prove who was the greatest amongst Arjun & Karna:

Arjun vs Karna = 7:0 victories in favour of Arjun…. which proves that Karna was nowhere close to Arjun in capabilities….. And u are still confused about who is the Greatest ?? Ha..ha..ha… Typical Karna lover….!!

In Draupdi’s Swayamwar, Karna first wanted to kill the Brahmin(Arjun), but when he found the brahmin too hot to handle, hence he backed off accepting his defeat….. So stop giving cheap excuse of Karna’s defeat….

In Virat yudh, Arjun thrashed & defeated Karna 3 times & Karna RAN AWAY on those 3 occasions in simple archery fight…. & on the 4th time Arjun used Sammohan…..

Your statement-“When Gandharvas took Duryodhan Captive,Karna was Drunk”

My ans- Ha..ha..ha… Miyaan, read the Original Vyas MB(KMG).. Karna was not drunk…. It was a full fledged war between Kurus & Gandharvas, in which Gandharvas thrashed Karna & Karna RAN AWAY & AFTER THAT Gandharvas captured Duryodhan…..

Your statement-“Bheeshma was unstoppable by Arjuna”

My ans- Pure LIE…. Prove it from Original Vyas MB(KMG) or DONT TALK IN AIR…..

Your statement-“It clearly means that Arjun can never Kill Karan if Karan is holding his Bow in his Hand”

My ans- Prove from Original Vyas MB(KMG) that Karna was not holding his Bow in his Hand when Arjun killed him or DONT TALK IN AIR…..

Son of SUN(Karna) got thrahsed by Bhima,Arjun, Abhimanyu, Satyaki, Ghatotkach, Gandharvas, Drupad etc etc…. So you are right, Karna was not even a match to tom/dick/harrys like Gandharvas/Drupad etc…..

    2. Please read my earlier comment on reason behind such non-canon anecdotes of Karna being more powerful than Arjuna etc. As far as original Mahabharat itself is concerned, Karna is nowhere near Arjuna in power, he can barely keep up with Bhima in archery. Below are the facts –
English transliteration of original Mahabharat text –
      1.Bhima delivers a humiliating defeat on Drona – http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07123.htm
2.Bhima defeats Karna 4 times in a row – http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m07/m07130.htm – Bhima spares his life each time due to Arjuna’s vow to kill Karna himself. Bhima does fall unconscious & withdraws in the 5th duel, but thats because Bhima was already injured before that last duel, having just decimated the entire Kaurava elephant army. The derivative anecdotes (with motives either to boost Kara’s character as a tragic-hero or Krishna’s role as an omnipotent deity), ignore the first 4 karna-bhima duels while just mention how karna spared bhima in the 5th one.

Also karna won a many on one fight with Bheema around 7 vs 1 fight with with bheema. karna defeated all of them including bheema.
